I drove to a mates place last night (car drove sweet) stayed there for a few hours went to leave started the car and it made a very horrid noise from my engine it was like theres metal bashing metal it could still idle just and if i reved it the noise would get louder/faster, theres was absoultley nothing wroung with it when i drove it 3hrs before, im no mechanical boffin when it comes to inside the engine what could it be?

I still drove it home and it ran but this noise was fkn loud
my mate reckoned it might be the cam or timing chane because if it was a piston it wouldnt go at all right?

Or some one said it could be a snapped valve
any suggestions would be very appreciated.
i'll have to get the engine stripped to find out what it is.

if its a piston or valve, you'd be blowing smoke/no power or white coolant

pop the timing cover off and check the chain

otherwise, suspect a conrod, or something in that area

do a compression test

Ditto. My 5M did much the same thing when a rod bolt let go.

does that make it a 'throw-out engine' or 'replace part' job?

I can agree with norbie on this....sounds likemy 5M when it first let go.

Not sure on if things could of been replaced...i'd say if you can afford it get a new engine Smile
If not...then try at all costs getting it rebuilt as it will probably cost more than a better engine. Sad

I had a similar thing happen when I spat a shim which ate HUGE chunks out of one of the camshafts... Idled rough as hell (for obvious reasons).
Big clattering noises which just got louder as the revs rose...

thanks for the replys dudes.
I will replace what evers broken the motor has been fully rebuilt its only done like 6000ks

i'll take the timing cover off and se if thers some chunky bits.
it wasnt blowing smoke and it wouldve gone quicker (as in reved higher but i sluged it home doing 30kmh)

it was like a clukcluccluckcluck and the more revs the faster it seamed like it was smacking whatever its hitting (im shit at explaining things i know)
