Decent car mag? Thu, 09 October 2003 14:06 Go to next message
I was wondering if anyone knows of any good car mags that have a reasonable amount of older cars in them.

I've been reading hot4s for ages but it's been getting beyond a joke, if i wanted to see a shiteload of riced up WRXs, SR20 based nissans or Honda Civics I'd go to maccas on a friday night Smile

Cheers

Clancey

I don't think such a thing exists any more, unless you're into old-school bogan V8's. Hot4's etc got beyond a joke many years ago... I think the last one I bought was in 1998 or something.

My collection goes back to 94, and back then it was chockas with nicely restored TA22's, Escorts, Geminis and RX3's. The majority of them were built by the owners in their shed after years of hard work and saving every penny. It's a far cry from the rich wankers in Hot4's et al who wheel their car from workshop to workshop and have no input apart from signing the cheques. Rolling Eyes

Yeah Hot 4s has gone downhill rappidly in the last few years. I used to buy it a ritual every month now don't even bother picking it up in the newsagency for a flick through it.

Fast 4s isn't all bad.

My favourite though is Zoom.

Too easy, might check fast fours and zoom out.

Think i'll give street machine a flick though, little too pushrod V8 for me. Now if they had some all alloy lexus V8s i might be interested Smile

Zoom is about the only mag with old cars(4 cylinders etc) in it. There are a couple of British mags that have old Escort, Cortinas , Austin Healy's and the like. They quite often have Sierra Cosworth engine conversions Evil or Very Mad .
I use to buy Fast Fours and Hot 4's, but they are just full of people who buy an import and load it full of HKS, Trust etc gear.
Even Zoom is staring to head in this direction. When Julian Edgar was the editor, it was THE mag.

Cheers,
Justin Rolling Eyes

What about CCC? (cars & car conversions)

british, lots of tech stuff, no ICE stuff.. last issue had a twin Yamaha R1 engined mini, an article on ECU tuning.. and of course a sierra cosworth engine conversion in a 206.

plus if people start buying it it might stop costing me $12! Mad Very Happy

A while ago, CCC did an article about a Tiger ZX100 I think (Clubman style kit car) that had two ZX1200 Kwaka motors and accelerated like nothing else. It was made that one engine drove the front wheels, and the other the rear wheels.

From memory, it did 0 - 60mph in 2.8 seconds Shocked Shocked Shocked

It got to 10mph within 1.2metres Shocked

Said that it needed more tuning and a lighter driver to get faster.

All this and road registered as well !!!! Twisted Evil

Is that the yellow one in Adelaide? Owned by a guy from RPM Performance centre?
I've heard about it, and also heard (2nd hand admittedly) that it only ran mid 11s down the 1/4. Which is a bit strange considering the massive Hp. Weight might be an issue but with that much power I thought you be in the 10's easy, and maybe nines. Maybe it's a traction problem? Confused

more details on www.rpmperformancecentre.com.au (at least I think that's the address)

All the suspesion mods you need are polyurethane diff cradle bushes - then you be dragging Laughing

Perhaps he left the trailer on it?

I've checked the website and there is no mention of 1/4 mile time. If he gets it all together it'll be the quickest mk3 in OZ. Cool
Now I'm wishing I'd done the 2jz conversion instead of the 1j. Damn my lazy hide Laughing

That 1jz is still for sale - with twin Blitz turbos! Apparently it can be yours for $4000. But he won't sell the turbo's seperately (neither would I - then you've got a turbo-less 1jz that no-one wants!).

11.3! Confused I guess there would be a lot of stuff to set up properly for a 10 sec run with suspension, tyres, launch control etc etc. You heaps of people running around saying their street car runs 10s or runs 11s, but unless you got a light car stuffed with a turbo rotary and wide slicks, or a very worked v8 in a true drag only car it's pretty damn hard.

Be interesting to see what his trap speed was - should be huge with that much power, even if he didn't get much traction.

And so this isn't a total hi-jack, Zoom is probably the pick of a ho-hum bunch. Speed tries too hard to be upmarket and classy. Just look for magazines with lots of Supra's and you'll be OK Laughing

ive found zoom to be pretty good of late - or Hi-po imports .. they usually have a decent tech article or " magazine guy car " in there

I usually browze hot/fast rice for eye candy and chuckle-ability at boeing winged excels

Unique cars gives me a perspective of what i cant buy Wink

Motor i read for the new car stuff - and to see whats coming up on the market
