I was always told Sunday as the start of the week, was based on a biblical belief. I'm still confused though as God rested on the sabbath, which is a Sunday???? In today's business world, mention the week starting on a Sunday however, and you either get strange looks, or comical laughs in your direction, so Monday it is for me!

It's Sunday. That is the proper start of the week.
Monday is the start of the WORKING week, but not the start of the week.

Exacly. Nowadays, everything is governed by work/money, so we now think of the start of the week as Monday. But it's not.

Without Catholicism, would we have been indoctrinated into recognising a "week" at all? Talk about being influenced by religion! Forget what your religion teacher told you, the working week is all that matters now. How many people still go to church on a Sunday anyway??

catholicism? The week has been around for alot longer then this era. The bible talks about a the creative days as a week, so the concept of week has been around since the year dot. Even if you don't believe in creationism, the week has been around for a helluva long time. As already mentioned, the earliest jews had a week which ended with the sabbath

Therein lies another religion, Judaism. I understand Paganists had a 7 day "week" as well, but if you look at other religions, there are conflicting time measurements, i.e. 10 day weeks (which religion/civilisation im not quite sure, but im pretty certain it exist(ed)s). The common link? Religion of some sort.
Im just basing my argument upon the fact that we (Australia) follow the widest spread religion of all, speak the widest spread language; therefore it may have had a bearing on how we perceive things.
I forgot to mention im an aetheist.

My week has as many days as I want in it. That way, when someone asks me to do something, I can honestly reply, "yeah, I'll do it this week", and then forget about it for another month!

It start's on Sunday!!! Sunday I tell you. In school we were always taught that Sunday was the beginning of the week.
As I said before, Monday has come to be seen as the beginning of the wek because the stock markets treat it as such and all that. But in reality, Sunday is still OFICIALLY the beginning of the week.

Now I know why I consider Sunday the start of the week! After going to that link and reading this:
Quote: | However, the fact that, for example, Russian uses the name "second" for Tuesday, indicates that some nations regard Monday as the first day.
|
In Vietnamese, Monday is "2nd day", Tuesday is 3rd, etc...
