Operating temperatures of 4AGE's Fri, 10 October 2003 04:16 Go to next message
I was just wondering if anyone knows the optimal operating temperature for the 4age's

Is the temperature guage a measure of water jacket or radiator temp?

Since ripping out my air-con my engine runs stupidly cold, and i mean stupidly. Unless im idling at intersection the needle barely jumps up past cold line. I was just wondering if your engine can run too cold???

Stop complaining!! Some people would love to be able to go around QR without the needle rocketing towards the RED.
Don't let my G/F know about that..... it was her civic. LOL Very Happy

But seriously man..... do you really trust the temp gauge in the factory cluster??

I don't! By the time they start to move up a bit over what they usually sit on the car is COOKING!

The normal operating temp is around 80 degrees, but I also have problems getting to operating temp with the celica radiator, when it's cold my temp will get to maybe 60 and won't go any higher.
In winter I have a peice of cardboard that I put over half the radiator, which works well. Even on hot days in traffic with the carboard the temp will get to about 94 degrees where my thermo fan kicks in & will never get any higher.
If you're very sure that the guage is working ok then you could try covering the radiator up a bit, otherwise my next step to getting things a bit hotter is to add a turbo, that should fix keep things a bit warmer. Wink

ok cool.
so if an engine has been running for over 5 mins, but is still far below its operating temp, can it be getting damaged?

Or does it just affect efficiency etc?

it should be fine..

mine is also like this it takes 5-10 minutes for the engine to even go 1/4 warm.

but once on the move after going on the high way and sitting at the lights it reaches 1/4 to nearly half and goes back down to 1/4 while driving at 80Kms+

If im only doing urban driving it always stays on cold (50kms p/h regular street limit)

I do have a feeling its pretty accurate.. my engine bay has alot of space becuase of no power steering, no aircon all that woosy girly stuff is out Laughing also my water splash guards are out so theres alot of airflow..

You shouldn't really complain though just give it a good warm up like i do. me and my friends who have 4AG's warm it up for 5/10minutes at the start of the day while having a quick brekkie or getting ready. It takes about 5-10minutes depending on weather for the cold idle to settle down anyway.

And as for effiency maybe on fuel if you boot it alot while its still cold.

As long as it doesnt over heat and you keep an eye on your radiator fluid. you wont wreck your engine or headgasket that will keep you and both your 4AG happy
