i think this course of action is reffered to in other earlier posts ...
e.g. <http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&g oto=172432&rid=2087&S=f9060bf5fb7030fd23b7 d3b3812978b6>
...usually involving using air pressure (and piston in right spot) to stop valve dropping down into combusion chamber- when the collets/springs are removed.
it would be safer to pull head off ... plus, if you have to replace the valve stem seals, it's possible that some valve stems are worn ... and while you're there, you might as well give the valve seats a litte grind to help them seal better.

hope you've got a lot of spare time - apparently takes around 8-10 hours (although I think the site I read that on was relating to a 6 cyl)

That would have to be a full rebuild for sure! I did my GZE on the car in 2 hours from start to finish with a mate to help compress the valve springs while I pulled the valve retainers out. Old seals can be removed with a pair of long nose pliers, just be careful
