5me with no emission gear

Ever since the exhaust shop has fubared my emission gear, the supra has been running very rich ..
Anyone had this problem / any solutions ?
Can this be fixed via a proper tune up at a mechanics shop ? or is it an ECU thing ?

can you do the engine check light thing to see what error code the ECU has?
if it thinks the o2 sensor is snafu, it might run rich to prevent lean burn (which leads to detonation, which leads to ... )
tho if we're talking about pre-unleaded engine, then no o2 sensor? dunno then... maybe something was shut off that supposed to see atmos or vacuum?
Boudan - what kind of car/engine are we rabbiting on about? what emission gear got toasted/trashed?
Charles.

all 5me engines are leaded.
they all came out in pre 86 cars - the year of unleaded.
so forget all this cat and o2 sensor shit. why answer the question at all if you have no idea!!
1st. why are you saying its running lean? - have you had an emissions test?
2nd. part of the emissions gear is an air pump, it pumps air into the exhaust manifold, removing this would make it seem like the engine is running richer.- but it has no actual effect on the air/fuel ratio at the time of combustion.

Actually chrisss
the 5m-e has an alloy head...means it was built to run on unleaded.
the fact that it was also designed and produced in japan before it hit our shores might also have somthing to do with the fact that you can run it on leaded, or 98+RON fuel(ie decent PULP)
japan has been using unleaded fuel since the 70's, i think about 10 years before we started.
anywho i think the fact that my supra has run pretty well on unleaded for the past 8 months has nothing to do with it?
but i dont know anything about the topic so i guess i better switch to using LRP fuel with my 5m-e engined supra, thanks for the heads up...think i'll start polluting my engine unnesicarily now.
as to my original post they're should of been they'd :/

yep your right it does no harm to run unleaded, but the emission system is designed for leaded - the jap market 5me's would have a different emission setup to our aussie cars. As we are living in australia there is no point in complicating the issue.
no cat no o2.

1st. It is running rich and i know this because it is blowing large quantities of smoke on idle, which (idle) is very very rough and sounds like it has been choked of air flow.
2nd. the tailing/s bolt that were on the on exhaust manifold were snapped by the exhaust shop. They only blocked 1 or 2 as far as i could tell and the others were left unbroken.
No emmission gear (vaccum hoses / sensors) have been taken off the engine and therfore could be creating a false impression or diagnosis to the ECU (<- if that even handles emmissions gear.)
(and to add to insult - it has started backfiring on cold starts...)
