you blow smoke on high vacuum, and replacing the seals fixes it

"replacing the seals fixes it"
I love it Smile

seriosuly tho - if youre blowing smoke, change them.
and every other gasket/seal you can find while you're at it

and check piston rings

(if this post makes no sense, I blame thesis)

if your valve stem seals are not sealing properly you will find that you will blow black smoke from your exhaust after being idle for awhile.

the seals are cheap to buy, it's the labour that's going to be expensive. trying idling your car for 1 min and then press on the accel.

hope this helps! Smile

A telltale sign of bad valve stem seals is a puff of smoke on startup which goes away quickly. My 2JZ does this so I'm going to have to replace them eventually. Sad

like GTStar said. if you sit at the lights idling and theres no smoke then when you take off there is, thats valve stem seals. if your blowing smoke all the time, probably piston rings.

changing the valve stem seals involves removing the head but in some cases they can be changed without removing the head if you got the right tools for the job (which i do at work).

Your motor will give a little puff on start up then clear pretty much instantly. I guess if they are really bad, then you will get it more often. Oil can leak down past a worn seal when the engine is not running, hence the puff during the first start of the day.

If you are seeing smoke while driving it is more likely ring damage. Rolling Eyes

I havn't heard of stem seals showing smoke while the engine is running. I would have thought that the cylinder pressure would prevent the oil entering the chamber. I guess during the induction stroke it is under vacuum. Your seals would have to be really stuffed though to let through enough smoke to notice it though.

its a shame toyota didnt take into account when engineering the engines that most of them would be sitting in a wrecking yard for extended amounts of time to be then sold off to us aussies Laughing

Shaged? ...Well, they come home late at night, or very early in the morining, walking and smelling funny?!!! Nine months later, they have a baby valve stem seal, and move into surburbia with some guy called Wayne. Laughing Laughing Laughing

They can be replaced without taking the head off. Take a long length of soft rope, thread it through the spark plug hole while the piston is at bottom dead centre, rotate the piston up towards top dead centre, the rope will act as a cushioning stop for the valves. Remove and replace the seals, then drop the piston and retrieve the rope by puling the end you've left hanging out the spark plug hole.

i see lots of white/blue ish colored smoke pour out of the exuast when i start the car. it eventually goes away. But i don't get to start it much, maybe once a week.

Does this sound like leaky valve seals to you?
I currently have all my cam covers off. I'm gonna retorque the head when i can get the right shaped tool. Also i have valve stem seals, but after reading whats required to replace them, i may just leave the leaky ones in there, until i actually have to take the head off.

dingaling: Yup your valve stem seals are stuffed. It is up to you how badly you want to fix them. It isn't really doing too much damage, just keep an eye on the oil level, which of course you are doing anyway.

clintgodde, not ALL valvestem seals can be replaced with the head on, some you definatelly cannot. but the way you described sounds like it would work but still sounds a bit dodgy. the way i do it is with compressed air but not everyone has access to an air compressor. if you do, cut the threaded end off a spark plug, drill a hole through the centre then weld an air fitting on the end. then all you do is screw in the plug and put an air line on it and the cylinder is full of compressed air and the valves cant fall in.

Yep, I've never personally done it,but the principle is sound for those applications where it's feasible, without compressed air. Personally I'd take the head off and have it serviced, and while the head is off check for a ridge in the bore too! If you have one, it's time for a rebuild, cos the new head will only make the bottom end worse!

If you go down a long steep hill without touching the accelerator till u get to the bottom, then accelerate, if there is a cloud of blue smoke from exhaust then, that is stem seals.
If it blows blue smoke continually, it is rings! To change stem seals is easy, the rope is the most effective, compressed air is ok if constant pressure - make sure either way the cylinder u are working on is t. d. c. Cos u can't get the valve back if it drops in, remember top. dead centre, no drop, or head off! Stem seals will prevent about 60% of the smoke, proportionate to the klm's the rings or seals have done
