Sure it's not so good to use bog at all and purist and skilled panel beaters can make bent panels flat. For the less skilled many of us resort to a bit of bog (polyester resin).
After beating out a hail damaged car the best I could I used bog. I'v really come to respect the skills of panel beaters. To my dismay after about 8 months the stuff has shrunk back. In most cases the fill depth was at max 2mm and most less than 1mm.
Are there some brands of bog which are better than others?
yes there is if you get it from a paint supply place they will have a good one, nearly all bog will sink back depending on how long you let it dry before sanding it. if it is not that bad you may be able to cut and polish it out
After talking to a resin expert I suspect that I used too much hardner. Also apparently your can heat cure bog after 24hrs of natural cure. I was told all bog will shrink at least 5%. So I guess it's pretty much impossible to get mirror flat finish that lasts with time.
Fibreglass is a possibility but were talking of small dents. Like the car was hail damaged and I beat them out as flat as I could (but not perfect) - some places couldn't get behind the dent.
Anyway anyone in Melbourne who is going to do fibreglass or carbon or kevlar work should check out RF services (now called Saint-Gobain RF Pty Ltd 03 93290111) at 635 Queensbury St Nth Melbourne and ask for Anton he's really helpful.
For small dents and scratches you could possibbly just use the fibreglass resin! This is what I have been told by some pannel beaters and is also what i'll be doing on my car!
On the bright side it will give me an opportunity to respray in yellow metal flake - should look dazling rather than the ordinary yellow. Haven't sprayed metalics/flake before.
