jza61 cooler Sat, 11 October 2003 17:20 Go to next message
since the bingle, I'm looking for a new cooler.
Ive figured while Im doing it, Ill bite the bullet and do it right.

what is the biggest cooler that will fit in a ma61? Ive heard varying numbers, from 500 to 600, x 300 (everyone agrees on the 300) x 75 - 100

which is it? I realise it will depend on the end tanks, but they're being custom made, so they shouldnt provide too much of an issue.
Im currently looking at a 600x300x90 - but Im not certain the 90 will fit. plus I cant really measure the distance on my current car, as 1) there's a cooler there and 2) I think it's smaller than it started out Smile

edit: and bloody hell it's cold at 4am. I cant feel my feet anymore

his is 540mm wide core size, I remember cos mine is 10mm wider Smile

It will really depend on the size of the tanks. To go much wider than 550mm would require small tanks.

As you can see --> http://iamfrank.ath.cx/19072003/19072003%20001.jpg <-- mine aren't exactly that big.

I'm still trying to dig up a pic of when I test fitted it...

Not much room for deflectors so you might not be making full use of the height of the core?

how long before a thesis is due am I allowed to start crying?
from what I can remember of thermodynamics, ideally Id want it silver, yes? absorbs as little heat as possible externally?

or am I remembering it in reverse?

edit: I think thats backwards
outside temp is lower than inside temp, so you'd want it darker

that makes more sense. I wish I were more lucid to do this bloody thing

good thing youre doing psych not physics greg Laughing

black bodies absorb and radiate heat the best. whats an intercooler? a device designed to facilitate the transfer of heat from one medium to another, by way of radiation from the core to air... hot inside, cold outside. best colour to radiate the heat effectively? BLACK...

god knows how much people are wasting their time and money squeezing in MASSIVE, brightly posilshed, coolers that will INSULATE their contents really well Confused

i wonder if someone can do the maths for me and calculate the effective cooler size in black required to match the heat transfer performance of these wanky massive bright alloy ones!?!

if you pay me enough, i'll give it a go, i wouldnt trust the results either Laughing

is it possible to make the INSIDE of an IC black too? hence even more efficient?

the direction of heat flow doesnt have any implications on the choice and performance of colour. heat will alway travel downhill, black bodies simply increase the effectiveness of heat transfer (in whatever direction)

oi!
I corrected myself thank you very much Smile

edit: well if external temps were hotter than internal temps of the cooler, youd want a silver one
which Ill keep in mind if I move near an active volcano any time soon Smile

if that were the case, an intercooler wouldnt work AT ALL regardless of colour Confused

actually, even if outside temp were say 80deg, that would be your uintake temp, wouldnt it Smile then the turbos would heat it more (above ambieant as usual) thus an intercooler would once again be useful Razz

tomorrow Razz

hence the *ponders* 17 hours till its due
and hence the stress

I only ever complete things at the last minute, but still seemto somehow do rather well. but in all honesty, I'll be satisfied with a credit for this. knowing my luck, I'm going to end up one mark short of a distinction

Just back at work after 2wks hol's - hence late on the thread.

My 300x600x75 FMIC with 'standard' end tanks is now in place - no major body work to fit and I think the pipes will go OK without major cutting into structurally important stuff or battery tray!

cheers,

Justin

JCMF,

Yeh, I'm back at work now - so have access to the digi camera again Smile . Will take some pics next weekend. And also of my newly sanded polished and painted (black with red) stock wheels. How I spent my summer vacation .... sucking in aluminium particles ... urgghh!
