car going in and out of tune WTF Sat, 11 October 2003 23:49 Go to next message
i went down the coast last night with some mates, the car perfect all the way down, when we left hungry's i raced a mate and the car started spluttering and i lost Sad .
i then raced a VL 5 mins L8R, when it got high up in the revs {6500} it backfired, it was just as i shifted for 3rd i had him till then too Very Happy .
it just got worse thru the night.

i just had a exhaust put on on thursday night and i had to bugger with the timing to suit the new power and its been fine since.

since the car was doing the same thing last night as it was when i was driving the car home from the zorst shop i just needed to fuck with the timing, so i pulled over and played {adv}and it went fine. but it lasted for 20 mins.

as the night went on it got worse, i was having trouble accelerating as it would back fire thru the zorst and carbs Crying or Very Sad . but if i clutched it and revved it was fine.

i pulled over, got under the bonnet and started revving it and a sharp blue flame came out of cyl 2's air cleaner.

it would run weird all night and then be fine. WTF is going on

maybe vacuum advance line to dizzi is leaking/loose?

<smug voice>
a healthy flame back thru carbi suggests firing at the wrong time Wink
</>

and random tinkering/failure suggests something is loose - dizzi bolted down? pickup inside dizzi loose? or, fuel not being delivered correctly (surging)? (at worst: timing chain leapt a cog)

and compared to the original, that's a might big exhaust Shocked

i once bought petrol from mobil warwick and engine ran like total crap - would run out of fuel under sustained boost or after giving a big of stick - this on a friday night heading down to Glen Innes.
no obvious blockages, gunk in lines, etc
ended up dumping fuel from tank ... have never bought fuel from mobil again - now i only use BP ultimate and Caltex (nearest 24hr petrol+cig+icecream)
