IS200 Upgrades Mon, 13 October 2003 03:08 Go to next message
Guys,

I have just bought an IS200, and Im not happy with its performance! What BPU mods can I do to get substantial power from the 1G-FE?? What I have in mind is:

2.5" Manifold back exhaust with Hi Flow cat
SARD Pod filter (I have already)
an SAFC OR a Piggy Back like Unichip etc
Cam Gears

What do you think the approx gains I might get?

There is a member on the lexus forums, claiming approx 160 flywheel KW from:
TRD Exhaust
TRD ROM
TRD Intake
Raised 11:1 comp

He has timed the 0-100 in 6.69 sec.

Id like to keep the car NA, I can get a GT28 kit quite cheap, but dont want to go forced. Ultimatley, Id love to go out and get a 3S-GE Beams and throw that in.

Thanks guys!

You need to keep in mind that NA mods cost lots of money for relatively little gain. Also remember that any power gained at the top end will come at the expensive of bottom end torque, which can be a significant problem in a relatively heavy car like the IS200. Frankly I don't think you'll be able to improve the real-world performance of your car without sacrificing streetability, unless you take the forced induction route and/or do an engine swap.

It's a shame a 1G-GTE swap isn't legal, because that would be a simple and very worthwhile upgrade!

Yeah Norb, the 1G-GTE is a bit old to put into an IS200. Thanks for the input anyways.

Personally I'd have to agree with Norbie, the gains would be minimal for the dollars outlayed. You'd probably be better off starting with a BEAMS in the first place or going the GT28 kit. The car would be much more enjoyable than a worked 1GFE...

I took the easy way out - purchased a near new 1JZGTE VVTi engine for my IS200. Today I picked up my Getrag 6 speed box as well.

All I have to purchase now is the computer - tossing up between Autronic and Motec. Both have experience with 1JZ VVTi engines but Motec haven't done a Lexus whereas Ray Hall (Autronic) has done a 2JZGTE in Lexus IS200.

Your gains will be modest with your planned mods.

Accept that you will gain nothing with the pod filter.

A set of tuned length extractors and free flowing 2.25" exhaust will probably give you the best gains.

Is yours a VVTi motor? If so, then you will only be able to fit a cam gear to the non VVTi cam. It will take a bit of fiddling/dyno time to get the best cam gear setting. But then I'm just wondering (thinking out aloud)...it is a 1GFE - do you even have the ability to fit 2 cam gears? The second cam is driven off the first cam, is it not?

Bumping up the compression would be good, but will require opening the engine. The VVTi will limit how much you can mill the head. If you are going to open the engine, then you might as well decompress it and turbo/supercharge it, or consider an engine transplant a la Deesonet.

Yeah, it is VVti, but Just want to make it a bit more fun to drive. At the moment, its "too smooth" for my liking, as in changine gears, the clutch is very soft. I would love to turbo it, but I cant! I dunno what to do!

There really isn't a lot you can do to them, hence a few people have turbocharged them. The 1GFE is made to be smooth, not particularly powerful Smile

MMMMMMM, Me think TTE Super Charger. Let me tell you you wont think the 1GFE is soft then. They make a huge difference.

Some guy who popped on these forums albeit briefly, turbocharged his IS200. I think his name was "TRD328".
Have a chat to him.

Here is his website:

The TTE supercharger kit looks awesome (I saw one at the All Toyota Day a couple of years ago) but from memory it costs $10k plus fitting. Ouch!

EDIT: here's a couple of pics I took:

Blown IS200 1

Blown IS200 2

are u sure the autronic can handle vvt-i?
i've read that it cant, but you can use the stock ecu to control the vvt-i and the autronic to do the rest

Re: IS200 Upgrades Tue, 14 October 2003 10:12 Go to previous message
Yes that's correct.

The Autronic can't do the VVTi function on a continuous basis - it can only switch it on or off. The 1JZ uses a on/off signal for the variable valver lift but needs a four way variable signal for the cam timing.

My intention is to use the existing VVTi functions on the Lexus computer and let the Autronic do the rest. Ray Hall has already done one like this so can build the required interface.
