I've been stuffing with the drum brakes on the rear of the RA28
do the drums in celicas self adjust over time or do you need to wind out the gear to push the pads closer to drum?
I'm going to do the disc brake thing drums suck.
Anyone have a converted to disc diff for an RA28 they'd like to part with I can't weld.

The drums do self adjust originally, although lots of them end up getting put together with bits missing so it doesn't work
Drum brakes suck.... Well, they DO, but.. Are you going to do something about those laughable front brakes first? If not, there's really not a lot to be gained by sticking on rear discs... and chances are the handbrake won't work nearly as well when you're done

Yes, but when you way up the cost of some new cylnders, brake shoes, replacing springs etc. and the cost of the disc brake conversion they are very similar(if you find the diff cheap ).
And I've got alot of the parts for the front as well.

The drums/shoes have two actuators, the upper is a hydraulic piston (slave cylinder) this is operated by the foot brake and self adjusts. The lower one is a mechanical lever from the hand brake and needs to be adjusted to take up cable slack.

So I need to adjust the shoes to within a few mm of the drum so I can get a solid feel to the pedal??

No, that won't help.
Try bleeding the brakes. The standard celica brakes are pretty ordinary at the best of times, so don't expect too much.
The old brake fluid is probably full of moisture and pretty ordinary. It might be time to give it a full change.

Try pulling the handbrake on slightly and feeling the pedal then - any harder?

I have just done the brake lines (I lost a cylnder and had to replace it) so I thourght I'd check the drums out and get the handbrake working again. but after putting it all together and bleeding it I'm losing pedal pressure as I'm driving to the point I have no brakes. after the car sits for a while the pressure builds up again.

Yeh that was my guess I've already pulled the master cylinder off the wreck, which was rebuilt recently
