4AGE 100kw - Spark Plugs. Mon, 13 October 2003 09:58 Go to next message
All

Just wondering if everybody uses Platinum spark plugs on their 100kw motors, or, do you use another NGK plug thats not plat?

With my thing running LPG, LPG, has a tendency to eat plugs - hence platinum plugs are NOT on the shopping list.

NGK, Bosch?

Why does LPG eat plugs? (I dont know much about the BBQ fuel Razz )

I always run denso PK20R8 platinum plugs with my 4AGTE on 18-21 psi boost, normal steel/copper ones break down for some reason on mine above 14psi, regardless of gap size.

I know NGK V groove BCPR6EY are another popular (and cheaper) option.

Let us know how you go.

Cheers
Phil

Just spoke to a Gas mechanic mate of mine, he recommends a steel plug, Bosch seem to work very well with LPG (despite their bad reputation on petrol), but just make sure that whether you go for NGK or Bosch, it must be a resistor plug. The higher voltage (but lower current) of a resistor plug is the best match for an LPG setup.

So I guess either BCPR6EY or BCPR6ES would be suitable.

NGK's are good... funny you say that, platinum are often said to die much quicker under boost!!! weird... maybe other ppl have poor mixtures??

NGK heat range 6 would be a good start. then maybe try 7's if they are to hot... NGK's are cheap and once you find your heat range, then you can start looking atother types (plat etc, or other brands)

www.ngkspark.com.au has listings (but maybe not for 100kw)

yeah, I expected steel plugs to perform better than the platinums too, but in my case they dont Sad They also foul more easily, maybe due to the larger electrodes. Iridiums miss like crazy also with my engine over 14psi. Its like hitting a rev limiter.

Well NGK reckon with gas you need a colder plug

The BKR6EP-8 is whats recommended for the 100kw motor.
I'm prolly going to start off with BCPR5EY's gapped to 0.7mm

It seems for gas they recommend a colder plug with 0.1mm less gap - see how we go I suppose...

Am kinda partial to the NGK's - never had any issues ever with their plugs, so, thats what I'll be going with.

colder? you mean 7's then? btw, all NGK's (unless specified with -x) come gapped at 0.8mm standard

ahh, and K and C and different as well Wink

so BKR7EY-7 or BKR7ES-7? Smile

i use just the normal NGK plugs on my 16v 4age bigport. BCP5REY or something like that. altho the manual reccommends platinum plugs, i dont bother and just replace the normal ones more often.

BKR6E-11 is what I got. I'll gap them back to 0.8mm and see how we go.
