Dumb question - wiper arm removal - MA61

I had to get the 'lower windscreen trim' off my MA61 (started to rust in each corner ). I thought - no problem just pop the wiper arms off, undo a few screws & there you go.
Now on other cars you just lift the wiper arms up off the glass until they 'lock'. Then undo the retaining nut & take em off.
However, the MA61 bonnet gets in the way so you can't lift them up.
I undid the retaining nut anyway and wrestled with them but they didn't want to come off. In the end I gave up & wrestled & sprung the lower windscreen trim out without removing the arms.
Is there some trick to getting them off without removing the bonnet?
Anyone have any tips for fixing rust in the lower windscreen trim? The metal is almost through in places.
Thanks
Peter

Thanks fellas - I will use more oomph to get them off.
Pity about the lower windscreen trim not being repairable - I guess I'll start trying the wreckers.
