HQ brakes on an XT130 Mon, 13 October 2003 23:03 Go to next message
Has anyone ever heard or seen this conversion? I've heard of it being done, apparently the bearings are identical (so discs should slide on with no mods) and I've also heard that the calipers bolt on? Can anyone say yay or nay to this?

And yes I do know about the Hilux-Pug conversion too, just looking at options Smile

I'm not sure about HQ, I DO know for a fact that commodore>celica (and presumably corona) bearings are identical though. But HQ stuff... It's pretty heavy, and not really that much of an 'upgrade'. Sure, it was the done thing in the 70s to 'improve' the braking on your torana or earlier holden, but, c'mon... Very Happy

Well the main thing I like is the vented discs and you can get alloy calipers for them (HZ, WB). Plus it's cheap Smile

yeah but there will be stuff all improvement fook, esp if you're installing em on a ke55 dude.

like what michael says, hq disc upgrades were and are still big on the 4 wheel drum brigades from the 60s and 70s - a vast improvement!

Why is this? Are the calipers ineffective or something? The discs are larger than XT130 ones and they are vented, surely they would be some sort of improvement?

the disc being larger, and being vented may indeed NOT have an affect on braking power.... but may simply offer less brake fade.

By the sounds of it, the calipers are a very inefficient, low clamp force design (from 70's remember?) that were designed to meet very very old and lax ADR's and similar tests. Personally i would look at a more modern designed caliper and disc, such as the pug dic and RT-132 caliper. The RT-132 is a twin opposed SUMITOMO caliper and can be spaced apart with some simple spacers to fit the peugot 604 273x20mm vented discs.
The calipers themselves are relatively light, and the stopping power is quite good (ask TheToyman74)
Other thing is the caliper bolts directly on your XT-130 strut.

Hehe - someone else told me that the Sumitumo twin piston calipers aren't very good (I did think of them)... But I suppose different views are to be expected Smile

I don't really require any more braking power, as even the XT130 brakes are simply awesome - another reason why I didn't want to sacrifice the extra mass for the probably far superior Hilux calipers. It's the fade I'd like to combat, hence the lookabout for vented discs. Although, I've never managed to overheat them so far (with RaceBrakes pads), but then again at the moment I only have a 4K... With the 4A the brakes are going to be worked a lot harder...

Is the RT132 caliper mounting the same as the XT130? Someone hinted to me otherwise, although I'm fairly certain they are the same.

Thanks for your input Smile

Yep, those are the ones, spaced out as well by the looks of them. Has anyone every weighed a set of them?

Corona caliper is +4kg(scale was only to 4kg). Probably ~4.5kg. Just weighted.

For anyone with XT130 struts, I have some good brakes for sale. They are early Tarago brakes. 256mm x 20mm vented with matching Toyota caliper. Included are nice slim adapter plates and alloy spacers. This package bolts to XT130 struts. Includes:

Torago hub and vented disks
wheel bearings + new spare hub seals
Torago brake calipers
adapter plates to fit XT130 strut
flex hoses
good pads

They are on my Corolla right now, which I have had on the race track many times with no problem or fade. I am going to the 4spot caliper and Pug disk "just because" I can. I did have fade problems with the XT130 brakes, but not these.

i am the one who has HQ brakes on an XT130. I think it works alright but i have never driven a standard XT130. Also my car is made for drag racing so brake fade isn't really an issue. Also i have big ass rear brakes off a Mitsubishi import 4wd so they help as well.

Here's what I did with RA60 struts:

Mazda 4 potters, UZS131 Crown rotors (280mm), Greenstuff pads, etc. Cept I'm selling them to a guy this weekend (probably) in the interests of bigger ones! Demuire - you've never faded the stocky brakes? You sure haven't tried hard enough! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

mrshin: I've faded to complete failure the stock KE55 Corolla ones, haven't done them with the XT130 brakes at all. Have done a few track events (did one at QR with only 1 front caliper working, the other was seized (!)) too! Mind you having 32hp atw means the car never goes very fast at all...

*edit* wow... so big Smile

Mrshin: what did it take to get those rotors on the RA60 hubs? It looks like it just bolts on but I doubt it's that easy...

norb, doesn't exactly bolt on by the pix. notice the 4 bolts and adaptor (i'd suggest)

should make for some good stopping power though.

I was referring to the rotors, not the calipers.
