20v head on 16v 4AGE Mon, 13 October 2003 23:28 Go to next message
Hi,

I think I'm about to buy a AE82, but the motor is bung (head gasket, scored bore). The car will eventually be built into a rally car, so I want the 20v box for the ratios, and think the 20v block would be a good idea (strength, compression, oil squirters).

Does anyone know if the 16v head will go on the 20v block? What about pistons?

Its either that or convert to 100kW AE92 motor. But that is pain with the wiring.

it wil bolt on.
i have seen a ae86 running 20v bottom end and bigport head. don't think it was still a non-interferance motor any more though...

you will need to do a bit of work if u put a 20v head on 7afe as the stroke is diffrent u will lose compression i think if i can remenber right and there are a few other problems to its not just a bolt on job as many think. ur car will hammer through if u did do it Smile

a mate of mine did this hybrid in his sprinter, bigport head on "silvertop" 20 valve bottom end, worked fine, he didnt mention any problems. dunno if he used 16 valve or 20 valve pistons though.

16v head onto 7a bottom end has been done heaps - even runs on stock ecu.

20v head should work.

Do the 4age pistons have valve reliefs in them?

If you put a 20valve head on a 16 valve bottom end, these wouldn't line up with the valves.

if it is non interference then it probably wouldn't matter but I wouldn't like to think about it changing.

4ag pistons have valve cutouts. so do the 20v.

the exhaust pretty much lines up, the inlet sort of does apparently. i have not played with one yet so i really cannot comment as to whether it is non-interferance or not

the fly cuts are in the correct position but are not as deep as the 20V piston, i did a quick mock up one day and decided against the effort, but thats not to say it cant be done. the best person to talk to re 7AGE is Jhonny

would a 7a-g/fe fit into a ae82 pretty easily or would it take some work.
