Valve Adjustment on 18geu

Does anyone know where you can get those little adjusting pad thingys to adjust the valve clearances, mine are all sitting around the .2mm clearance mark or less and apparently should be around the .25 - .39 mark.
Are these a standard thing you could get from somewhere like repco/sprint/motormate.
I rang some people but they had no idea what I was asking for and frankly neither did I.
If only I knew the lingo, then I could be a super duper engine aficionado.
Also how do you know what the cam timing's should be set to? My intake was set to full advance and the exhaust to one notch less than full. Or is this dependent on the condition of the timing chain?
Cheers

I know exactly what you are on about. Realy, you need to go to a workshop that deals with Jap engines or old rally cars. Usualy you will have to work out exactly what shims you want, then exchange them for yours, at a cost. They may have the ones you want, or grind yours. If you let them have your engine and head it may cost alot to get it all worked out. Best to work out the shims you want yourself and save some money. Make sure you get the propper specs. Intake and exhaust are different specs.

Work out what shim thicknesses you want, then give these guys a call:

If all you clearances are too small, you don't need new ones, figure out how much needs to be removed for each valve and get the shims ground.
Find out the exact measurements that are required.
exhaust .32-.36 (if I remember rightly)
intake .26ish is one of the numbers, I can't remember the other one.
We have the other issue, our shims are too small, we accounted for some narrowing of the gap when we recon'd the head, but for some unknown reason, the gaps all got bigger.
We found this weird as the head we had just replaced (10" crack) after its recon had the gaps narrow after 40 k's (as expected)

thanks guys, I will measure the thicknesses and see what I need on the weekend. I was kinda hoping I could get a bag of them and pick and choose or something that way i could do it in the one day.

hahaha, you reckon you could do it in a day do ya?
It take bloody age to find the shims you need, especially if you've got a bag full, that's the problem with needing the thickness to two decimal points.
Micrometers are great if you've got one, otherwise, good luck.
I think Brenton at Fours'n'More (next to Celica Spares) does exchanges for shims I think, and he has a machinist around the corner from him at SA Auto Engineering Service who has done work on these engines before.
Go to them and see what they suggests.

well i got to the little pads, now for that micrometer thingy...
I assume you are talking about sleeka spares and fours n' more on the north side of town (I'm at woodcroft).
I'll see what I can do, hey thanks a bunch, you guys rock.

I don't know if this will help anyone but i thought it might be useful.
Information recieved from a mechanic who couldn't be bothered doing it himself, kudos to him.
After measuring the thicknesses of the pads and determining how much needs to be ground down...
Grab yourself some 400 grit wet dry sand paper and a really flat surface (I used a glass door from our entertainment unit) and sit with the shim making nice little figure eight patterns on the paper. You could wet the paper if you want, but i didn't notice any difference.
it takes about 5-10 minutes of figure eighting to ground the shim down about 0.04 millimetres. Just apply a steady even pressure and try not to ground your thumb and forefinger down by equivalent amounts if you can avoid it.
When you get close to the amount you want to ground, switch to 1000 grit just to remove the scratches.
to do all eight for me (2 of which were out by about 0.1mm) took about an hour and a half.
but all measurements are now within tolerances, so thanks again guys.
now is there a way to know what hole i should put the pin's in for the camshafts. if i rotate the engine both cams seem to be a litle before top dead centre (small scooch of an amount though). the intake is set to full advance setting (the right most hole?) and the exhaust is set to one before this.

just remember that the hoes in the cam have a different spacing compared to the gear, kind of a primitive adjustable cam timing, and that when u fully tighten the adjuster it'll pull the intake cam backward somewhat too
