Is it possible to register a vehicle if the vehicle has no compliance plate? I'm on the verge of buying a 1992 Celica ZR and i need to know this before i buy it.
The current owner has it registered and its about to expire but it has no compliance plate!
Do you just need the compliance papers (without the plate)to have a vehicle registered?
I don't wanna buy it and find out i can't register or drive it cos it aint complied.

What makes you think it's a grey import and not a locally delivered model?

What do u mean by grey import?? the 5th generation celica Zr's are all imported yeah??? so they need compliance. this one didnt have comp. plate on it. he may have papers i don't know......... but he sed it is complied but i dont know whether to believe him cos he just wants to get rid of it. and by coincidence the rego is about to expire. do u have to have the plate for it to be complied or will the compiance papers do???
anyway the question remains... is it possible to register a vehicle and LEGALLY drive it without a compliance plate?

If it was sold in Australia it should have the Toyota Australia build plate on it with the date of manufacture and so on...

so even if the celica was imported from japan, and the private importer sold it (in australia), it should have a toyota plate on there somewhere?? i dont think it did. but why should it have an australian toyota plate on it???? it has nothing to do with toyota australia as it was a private import.
i checked the firewall, and i dont remember seeing any kind of plate. its weird.

So you're certain it's a personal import? That seems strange to me because that model was sold locally by Toyota Australia, and I'm pretty sure the parallel importation laws don't allow you to register personal imports over here if they're the same as a local model...

we're not all pertoleum heads like urself! i admit i know jack about cars, which is why im here lol! so what is the RTA??
anyway the zr celica is different to the sx. it has a 2.0L engine instead of the 2.2 so they're different to a local model here.
yeah im pretty sure its a personal import cos toyota australia never imported the ZR celica.

Toyota usually sold a ZR version, they just tarted it up. If it is indeed a 2l version, then it is imported. You have to work out how it got into the country in the first place. The fact that it was actually registered before means that most likely a private import by someone down the line and it has gone through the necessary paperwork to be registered.
The RTA is the Road and Transport Authority (in NSW), what you need to do is call them (or the equivalent wherever you are) and quote them the chassis number or the like and they'll tell you if everything is fine.

The Compliance plate is in the boot, under the carpet.
Its not in the engine bay.
