Getting some interest - AE86 fans read on.....
|

A mate and i are looking at developing and producing some AE86 performance products for the local market, We are not doing this to put huge inflated profits on the products but rather to assist fellow ae86 fans build their cars up to the potential that they have.
This is all in the planning stages at the moment, A few idea's have been raised but what i am looking for in this thread are some more ideas about what people with ae86's want?
We all dream of having decked out TRD/Cusco/RS*R etc etc cars but sadly most of the time funds dont allow us to get those exclusing tuning parts, or they are just too hard to come by.
So we aim to have similar sort of products that allow you to have the benifits of the name brand gear but at a more available option.
Some of the idea's so far would be.
-Strut braces, front and rear
-Traction brackets
-Roll Center Adjusters
-Adjustable panhand rod with Solid mounts
-Posibility of having a Adjustable and rod end 4 link rear end kit
-Adjustable lower control arms for the front
-Also, Spun Billet center's for Momo, Sparco etc wheels where the horn button goes, In this center would be the numbers 86
These are the current idea's, Now its up to you guys to help me out with further and REASONABLE requests and idea's of what reasonable pricing you think might be for each product.
Cheers
Simon

well i think u should look at whitelines catologue or kmac, and compare pricing of what they got with what you got, and come to a fair pricing which will be cheaper then them or you think is fair. You should try and get other components such as custom Springs, or coilover kits.

most of the whiteline gear does not feature what we have, nor do they have rod ends (rosejoints, solid mounts for thr clueless) in their parts.
so not really a similar comparison.

i think this is a great idea
a suggestion on the RCAs, (i have contemplated getting some made up for my car, but havent got around to it as the rest is so horrible at the moment)
you mah be able to sell them say 60mm thick, then people can get them machined down to whatever height they need, although it would probably not make much difference after having ANY RCAs put in. i would suggest not bothering with the camber adusting ones, as i din't like them, and you are planning on selling adjustable arms anyway.
maybeye sell complete poly bush kits? maybeye some bushes are better off being rubber? traction brackets are a good idea, as they would be fairly straughforward to make (i think)
strut braces definately, these should be fairly cheap to get made, but are cheaper to make yourself i suppoise.
extractors maybeye? (around 150 bucks would be nice)
EDIT: re-read your first post, i would hope to pay the following prices
RCAs - around 100
front strut brace - somehwhere between 50 and under 100 (do rear strut braces actually do anything in a sprinter besides hog up boot space?)
bush kit - 200 ish for the lot?????
thats about all i can think of now, good luck!

now we're talking idea's
we can do adjustable tops at this stage but pillowball's are a l;ittle harder
60mm is a fair chunk of an RCA' for one thing its hard getting material that size and then 2ndly its hard getting tooling to cut it. So we may make 25mm ones that are able to be joined together to make a 50mm one. they would use a spigot and bolting system.
bush kit: probaly wont do this just yet as w have all the stuff to fabricate metal products with not rubber or plastic

from what i have heard, short shifters on sprinters let you try to shift the gearboxes quicker than they want to, and arent a good thing. i dont minde the throw, and it makes a nice click noise so im happy.
60mm is pretty thick, alloy plate that big is ludicrously expensive, even 20mm plate is pretty expensive.
wouldnt be keen on buying two sets though, although i suppose only one on each side would have to be drilled and dowelled, so wouldn't cost twice as much.
50mm would be a good "ideal" size (for me)

the nature of the short throw shifter forces the gearbox to change gears at a much faster rate then it is suppose to. During hard driving you would be changing gears hard and this murders the syncros in no time since the box was never designed for this sort of shift speed!

are you guys going to eventually press some nice forged rims? that would be nice!
i think developing an exhaust kit for the 86 would sell heaps easy. a no fuss bolt into place item
maybe a cold air intake system?
nice billet oil caps?

simon, had a good idea today
you should make wheel spacers/hub adapters
the spacers would be easier, i would suggest making them from say 30-35mm plate, as this would allow you to use rims that are 4 by 114.3 and 38mm offset - early silvia wheels, i think these are among the most common, at least a lot easier to find than ones that bolt straight on.
(would need longer wheel studs, but i think these are pretty easy to get for sprinters)
hub adapters are a little different, and more legal as the adapter bolts onto the hub, and the wheel bolts onto the adapter, and you could go from 4 by 114.3 to 4 by 100 or whatever. there is a fair bit more in making hub adapters though, still fairly do-able.

Have you given any thought to coilovers? or is it too painful. It'd be nice to source some without having to part with an arm and a leg in the process

Sounds like a mad idea, and for some reason I just feel like helping out.
So if you need any help, maybe like a melbourne branch to help organise orders etc? Feel like adding a contribution to the aus toyota community or something lol.

Yep, I second the adjustable camber strut tops, and also a full roll cage or half cage. The aluminium front grill sounds good, too, although i imagine it would be hard to fabricate mounting points on it. I've also heard conflisting opinions about the good of rear strut braces on AE86's... If they are worthwhile, then I give them the thumbs up too.
By the way, I cam across another small company website (USA based, I think) for a AE86 parts that might be useful for another point of comparison on prices if you don't know about them:
http://ggtyler.com/index.html
However, I just tried the link out now and got nothing... maybe the place has folded?

np...option.
anything i can do for the 86 crew!!
lets keep this thread going..
btw simon.. how about those braces for the under the front gaurds? you still want some?
it'll be tight....but i could get some made up this week, and bring 'em up to you on the weekend, if Rhett's car doesn't get sold before then??
let me know asap.
also, i know this might sound a bit corny, and not actually performance/drift-stiff related, but how about some sort of bracket which can be screwed into the roof, where the interior light goes, so you can mount a video camera on drift days??
i dont know...might be too easy for ppl to just make themselves

it's rice.
because, if you own/drive an Australian Sprinter, you don't own an Apex - and advertising your car as something it isn't - and that's rice.
if you own a JDM AE86(like me ) and your car is an Apex(like mine ), and you want the badges, etc., that is not rice.
it's like all the dickheads out there in their Executive Commodores, with 'SS' and 'H SV' badges all over them.
it's rice.
and for your information, Toyota still makes the stickers. I bought some last month. Therefore, it is a copyright breach. especially if you are selling them, that aren't genuine Toyota parts.
copyright law states that the manufacturer of a product has to have ceased production and sales of said materials for a period of 50 years. not 5 years. - unless you have permission of course...
Not having a go at you dude...just sayin' is all. But at least your stickers are cheaper than genuine Toyota one's. Even at my price, and I work at a Toyota dealership.
And bitch....don't call me a fool.

hey....you're either a wanker, or a liar.
that's the end of my input into this thread.
I wasn't having a go at ae86drift for making the stickers. If you notice where i originally said 'copyright breach', the after it implies that i was joking. if you're gonna arc up about a joke, dude, you need a life.
Also, don't get me wrong about the 'rice' labelling. I'm the last person to label someone a ricer for having stickers on their car....IF it is what it says.
I don't think it's rice to have RS*R/Cusco/TRD stickers on your car, IF you have their products on/in your car.
If your car is an Australian Sprinter, and you put an APEX sticker on it....that's rice. Pure and simple.
Call me a wanker all you like, dude. At least i can come up with a better retort than...'oh....ummm....he's an elitest wanker...'
At least you know how to use adjectives
