If your gearbox has an alloy case, I wouldn't use acid or alkaline salts, it will eat it away! Use a hydrocarbon base solvent, for small discolourations, or get it blasted, either wet or dry, but plug everything up if you plan on doing it to a complete box - the grit gets in everywhere! Wet blasting would be my weapon of choce!

i used diluted pool acid to clean down an alloy tray, worked great but dont leave it on too long or you wont have a gearbox any more
