Alternators

My alternator is about to die, and i was wondering if there were any from other cars that will bolt straight in, or bolt in with only a couple of minor mods (and what would those mods be), as i don't really have the facilities to go fabricating things like new alternator mounts etc.
The engine is a Bluetop 86kw RWD 4AGE

do you have a picture of the belt patten or can you describe it? Like does it have about 4 ripples, or just one "v" shaped belt? Id imaing most toyota ones would go on..just take your one to a wreckers and compare it to one? being another toyota one it should have a similar/ same connection plugs etc.

What is wrong with the alternator? I'm pretty sure you can get rebuild kits (new bearings / brushes) if the stator / rotor windings are still good. Then it will be totally reconditioned, better than a secondhand one that your not 100% sure of the condition....
Also bear in mind if you do go looking for a new alternator off something else that some alternators have an internal regulator and some have an external regulator!
Cheers

Ok, when i idle, it makes a god-awful whirring noise, and you can smell it burning something inside of it, its been getting progressively worse over the last month or so.
I got quoted about $170 from an auto electrician to get it rebuilt, and around $280 for a new one

prolly the slip bearings or whatever theyre called. im sure u can find a cheaper price than that
i got quoted 120 for mine.luckily i found a mate who could do it for cheaper.
9 times out of 10 u dont need a new one. new ones are expensive and not really worth it when u can get one rebuilt
