hi to all
im tryin to get an 18rg started
i think the engine builder might have fukt up the cam timing
the slots in the cam just behind No 1 bearing cap on both cams are out by a tooth
the inlet cam is one tooth to the left
and the ex cam is one tooth to the right
arnt the slots suppose to be straight up on both cams when the engine is on top dead centre
has anyone got some pics as i need to fix it tomorrow cause im goin away
customer wants his car running
thanks

prolly not much help directly, but if you have a dial gauge or a keen eye, check where the lobes are centred. should be maybe 100-110 deg apart?
can also do this by determining open and close angles and working out the lobe centre from half way between....
shouldn't take too long to turn it over a few times and get a rough measurement. you can get free degree wheels from
(the tavia is particularly good)

good luck...
of for reference, a stock K motor intake opens 16BTDC and closes at 50ABDC. exhaust is opposite.
for a K-B motor the timing for intake is 18BTDC and 58ABDC
for my current cam,
intake 33BTDC, 64ABDC
exhaust 72BBDC, 32ATDC
intake centre line 106ATDC
lobe seperation angle 108deg
hope this helps a little

sideshow, if you really get stuck i have here the "green book" engine manual for 18R's.
And yes, those notched are sposed to be dead vertical at TDC compression.
I had thought that perhaps the builder had done this on purpose, but then i wondered why would he retard the intake and advance the exhaust??
Have you got ignition timing sorted? I'va had a couple of problems with that and i can tell u how to insert the dizzy at the correct angle if you like..

it got it running but not perfect
it has bigger cams so i told the guy to take it to a good workshop and get the cams dialled in
when i check the timing with my timing light i cant see the
marks
its as if the timing is out but i think my light has flat batteries
ill wait till the exhaust is done
the carbies seem out aswel as it dies when u try to rev the engine
and it spits flames out the solexs

mmmmmmmmmmm, flames out he carbs, sounds like a possible timing problem, if its too far retarded, these do NOT rev at all and they backfire
