For some reason, just as i was coming home a minute ago. I started my car turned on my lights and there were no lights for my speedo and taco but there were lights for my petrol and temp etc. Also the heat and petrol gauge went right off the scale. Any ideas?
Also, when i turn on my high beam, the outside lights stay on but get brighter, the inside lights remain off.
Cheers

Hey i experienced the lights not coming on behind the speedo/tacho before in my ra28, but still remaining on behind the temp/amp/oil/fuel/clock.. I have no idea what does it, becuase it was only happening 50% of the time for me.. could just be old wiring or faulty relays.. same with the headlight problem.. could just be wires decaying or a bad earth??
Follow the headlight wires to the fuse box or relays and test them if you can??
Maybe have it checked by an auto-electrician if you are not keen to investigate yourself..
Id be interested to know what causes these problems...
Good luck..

Wacky gauges and/or dash lights almost always means a bad earth, either under the dash or between the battery and chassis. This is quite common in old Celicas. Check all your earths and clean any corrosion, repair any breaks, and beef them up a bit with thicker wire if necessary.

if that were the case it would have to be the one under the dash if the other lights stay on right?

this would also explain why my gauges rise as soon as i turn on my headlights? it seems that as soon as more load is placed on the electrics, the gauges rise..

my old RA23 would do this regularly.
fixed by repairing every visible/accessable earth connection in&out of car and replacing connector at back of alternator
sometimes you'll get a very faint alternator light - only visible at night with dash lights off

Im assuming there are separate earth wires for the lights and the dials since the dials still work. How do i get to the earth wires? and how do i find which wires to replace?
cheers
