i think it is the amount of times the axles turn for one revolution of the input shaft. or vica versa

Turn the input and count output as munki said..ie turn the input 10 times and see what the out put is. You should have to turn the input say 39 times for 10 turns of the outputs (for a 3.9 diff)
Or count the teeth (via removing the rear cover) on the ring gear and the pinion (input) gear and do some division, should be something like Ring / Pinion = 43 / 11 = 3.9.

Try this for a start
Once you've read that you realize that the input is the one that the drive shaft connects to (which is in the center of of live axle), the outputs are at each end and are what the wheels connect to

okie...i've read that..need to clarify something..
just to test it on my car..i just spin my rear wheels 10 times and count how many times the input turn rite?
output can be the wheels?
