Thermofan swtich question Mon, 20 October 2003 08:42 Go to next message
Is there supposed to be a resistor in the thermofan switch?

Cos when im having a problem with the Efi fuse continuously blowing and ive narrowed it down the thermoswitch. Its showing up saying theres no resistance through the circuit on the multimeter..
If there is a resistor, i would have thought if it blew it would create an open circuit.

Since the thermoswitch is a sealed unit, i have to replace the whole thing, so what options do i have as a replacement besides the toyota part.. any better aftermarket alternative?

If its just a switch and not a thermistor it wont have any resistance.

its a thermostat.. as far as i can tell a bit of metal heats up and presses a switch dependant on when the knob is positioned.

is it the switch or the fan or the relay?? the switch should power the relay, which in turn powers the fan.
how did you narrow it down to the thermofan switch?

if it keeps blowing, might be good to invest in a circuit breaker! they are available for 12V in various amps, and are around $10... so much easier than fuses, since you can see if it's tripped and you just turn it on Very Happy

relay.. well its sorta all one unit.
the fan originally stopped working in traffic, and i pulled over when i noticed the temp gauge going unnaturally high. i fixed it by mcguyvering it up direct to the battery but the car wouldnt start because of a blown fuse, i originally thought it was because i was screwing around with wiring (which im not really an expert on.. if you couldnt guess Razz)
i decided to get to the bottom of it and realised the thermoswitch still worked and went to drive it and the fuse blew again when the car slowed to idle, i replaced the fuse (lucky i had 5 lying around) and it blew again, but it doesnt blow when the fans are directly connected to the battery.

It seems to only blow if the car is idling, and it seems to be idling a lot lower now that ive been trying to work this out than before, it idles so low that it stalls on occasion.. might just be that by conincidence the idle screw has loosened magically

im not sure how the ciruit goes, if Rod's around maybe he can answer it because he was there when the engine was put in... its just weird that its having problems now and there was no problems with it earlier.

good idea.. I might chuck a circuit breaker in.. ive only got one 20 amp fuse left and i dont want to get stuck somewhere.

you mean the hydrofan on the stock 1JZ?

Not sure if thats what you mean, but the hydraulic radiator fan works off a temp sensor in the bottom of the rad..from memory its about 5ohms when cold and should get nearer to .5 ohm when nearing 100 degrees.. this is what speeds up the fan.
