icon3.gif  Getting modified car registered in Perth?? 3T GT Einto a TA22? Tue, 21 October 2003 10:49 Go to next message
Hi all,
Hoping someone from Perth can help me.
I have a TA22 fitted with 3T GTE, big exhuast blah, blah...

Most likely moving to Perth shortly and want to know how hard it is to get this type of set up approved by road transport there??

I have just finished the project and only partially way through getting it legal in SA.

Hoping its a bit easier in WA?

Thanks,
Simon

Very common conversion over here. Don't think you'll have any troubles, but it depends on how "clued in" the rego inspector is. AS such, you don't need a RWC to register a car in WA, but to rego the car, it will be inspected by the Transport Department. This arm of government has a website, you can find it under the primary industries area of Western Austraslian Government.

Much easier to get it registered in Perth if it has been registered previously and currently in another State. Clint has it right, it will be inspected before it can be licenced. The conversion is common and you should have no major problems.
Cheers,
Mitch.

You could always go straight over the pits but expect some grief and delays by the inspectors who will think you are lazy and taking shortcuts, and they may try harder to fail the car.
Fill in the paperwork and get a 'pre-approval' first, before you take the car over the pits. That way you earn some credibility because you are doing things the way they like it, using the system. This should also save you time and money in the long run.
Cheers,
Mitch.

By "pre-approval" are you talking about the essay style question sheet that they have on internet or engineer approval

do you know how much to go over pits?? and get engineered??

yeah, definately fill in the pre-approval, it cost about 15 mins, 10 sheets of paper, an a4 envelope, and $1 worth of stamps.

and when i got it back (1-2 weeks later), all he said was get the engine swap engineered, and get the engineer to test the brakes to see if the car can handle the new engine (i'm presuming by this he meant weight distribution wise)

so basically i just have to get the new engine mounts approved, and for the engineer to say, yes, you have put that engine in your car, and then over the pits, la la la, done

even if you are coming for SA, fill in the form, and send it off, they will tell you anything you need to know
attach a letter stating the position your in and they will help you.

over the pits is about $55 first time, and not sure if it drops for the 2nd, 3rd etc, but it doesnt go up

engineering, i dont know, but i have been told it ranges from $250 to $500 or so, depending on what has to be looked at

Thanks guys.
My car is registered in SA now, but just not with the 3T GTE. I have done an engineers report already and got up to brake testing and left it there cause they want $600 to do the test which is a rip off.
Hoping I don't have to do the brake tests in Perth.

Simon

Simon,
You may not have to get the brakes tested in Perth, it will all depend on what the reply is when you submit the 10 page essay. General rule of thumb for them is usually that if a bigger engine goes in than original, you must fit brakes that would have been equal to or better than the car that 'new' engine comes from, and yes, that does mean a brake test. That can cost from $300 to $600 over here as well.
Cheers,
Mitch.
