Here's a curly one (7mgte wiring) Tue, 21 October 2003 23:19 Go to next message
Some help here would be much appreciated guys.

Last night I was going out in my lovely supra. Smile Stopped to put some fuel in it (this is about 2 mins from home). Then when I got back in and turned the key there was nothing. And I mean nothing. There was no click, no whine, nothing! It was almost as if the wires had been cut. So I fiddled around for ages with my not so lovely supra and after I had had a rage attack and thrown some tools around I called my bro. We fiddled around with it for ages as well, then decided to clutch start it after nothing was making any difference.

Thankfully that worked, I drove it home and parked it there. Then I decided to try and start it up just so see. It worked perfectly. Confused

The weird thing is that there was power being drawn as the raido was turning off, the clock was dimmin etc when I turned the key. And it cannot be a problem with the starter motor as it worked perfectly the next few times.

Pleas help!

Check the battery terminals, as if they have an oxide coating (dark grey lead rather than bright and shiny), the additional resistance can reduce the current draw capability, and it can happen quick.

Remove the terminals and scrape both the battery posts and the inside of the clamps

Happened to me a few times before

Cheers

Thanks dude. I did check that. They are a little like that and the weird thing is that the positive terminal had huge amounts of corrosion on it. But I took it off and cleaned it up.

But the thing that got me was that it didnt work any time at all, and then all of a sudden it did. All I had done was drive it 2 mins down the road.

Plus, if your battery just isnt drawing the power, wouldnt you still hear the click of the starter motor???

put vaseline on the terminals it stops them corroding.

Have had this happen with a mates 7m-gte, although I think it made a click sound. Bascially, after giving the starter motor a good tap whilst trying to crank it it eventually started. I think sometimes the starter or solenoid gets a bit dodgy.
My 1jz does this from time to time as well - drive it for a while, turn it off, try to start it again and it doesn't do anything. Switch it off and on a couple of times (sometimes a lot more) and it will start OK. On other days it will be fine.

Same problem on a 4AC. May be a starter solenoid problem - when they get hot they don't work and wait a while as it cools and it works again. If no click, solenoid is not actuating. We cleaned the wires etc etc but occasionally still get the problem. Carry a big screwdriver in the car now and if it happens, just short positive lead from back of solenoid to terminal that joins to starter motor and she cranks over every time. It even starts if the ignition key is turned on first. Rolling Eyes Oh ... and make sure it's in neutral when you do it or you may end up in a position to do a quick oil change while you're under the car. Cool

rofl.

Nice one.

I'll keep that in mind.

lumpy, I must of tried to turn it on about 100 times. Literally. I was desperate because I was supposed to be somewhere. Sad

Scorpion, I was sitting in that petrol station from 7.45 till 11.30. I think it was cool by then but still wouldnt work. Smile

If you can get to the back of the starter motor, try the screwdriver. If I get a chance tonight I'll take a picture to show you which terminals we short.
