Sounds like the auto choke has a few issues, try adjusting that, otherwise, it might just be dead.

Our 18rc had auto choke trouble towards the end of its use

Is your temperature sender stuffed. If the choke wasn't getting propper temperature readings, it will not work properly, and would do exactly what you've outlined.

I think it's supposed to idle at 3000rpm for about 30sec's and then it slowly backs off that's if you pushed the accelerate all the way down that will occur.

You can adjust that 3000rpm thing by bending rod(mild Z thing) that goes from fast idle rocker to choke flap mechanism and the nose that leans on to rocker. Correct rpm(from memory) when fast idle is on is about 2000rpm's. Fast idle should go off when you slightly open the throttle. Dying part is prolly caused by too lean choke mixture. That can be adjusted by turning heat wire bell clockwise->richer mixture. Check also that choke flap is fully closed at open air temperature of 20C and fully open at normal running temperature. Get repair manual for more info. Renewing and checking that vacuum hoses goes from right place to right place makes wonders also.

Do these carbs have an idle cut off solonoid? Is it working??...

On my 2TC (and on every one of my carb'd crapheaps before it!) I just ditched the choke altogether anyway - 2 mins of grumpiness doesn't really bug me anyway Evil or Very Mad

i had minor problems when my carby was rebuilt, on the 18r-c motor, the auto choke burnt out the wiring because it was shot, used to work good before i got it rebuilt
like one doode said must be a problem with the auto choke

if it dies quickly after revving up, then i'd be looking for intake leaks. i had two 0.5x5mm leaks in my manifold gaskt and it would do this. tap the throttle, revs up then dies.....

get a torch and start lookin.
