a/c compressor or p/s pump squeak Wed, 22 October 2003 09:34 Go to next message
ma61 5me,
a loud squeak sound,
its either the aircon compressor or powersteering pump, hard to tell coz they're to close together,
squeak occurs when lights are turned on, or aircondtioning turned on, and gets louder when you rev the engine.
im thinkin its a bearing stuffed somewhere i dont think its the belts, maybe wrong.
any ideas?

what would i be looking at for a rebuilt pump or compressor(with regass).
the noise is driving me insane.
also the aircon makes a sorta putting whirring sound, is the comp on its way out, or is it just 20y.o. wear an tear?

Cheers

Chris

im pretty sure itd be the belt. the one that holds the water pump and alternator. Does it especially happen at night or when the weather is colder?

if it moves more than about 15-20mm then its too loose

15-20mmm...thats being generous..especially on that thick belt. I would've thought 7-10max on a belt like the 5m alternator one.

yeah well the bearings or bushes may be shagged in your alternator. when the air pump goes, it normally makes a knocking sound.

cheaper and easier to buy one 2nd hand...otherwise about $60 for parts. Also depends on how hard it is to find them. Although Not too hard id imagine...

The fact that the noise is load-dependant suggests it's a problem with the belt; it's probably just worn to buggery and needs replacement. If it was a dud bearing the noise would be constant.
