Battery relocation Thu, 23 October 2003 04:40 Go to next message
I did a bit of a search on this topic.
A lot of good info, but didn't quite answer all the questions I have.
I want to shift the battery in my car from the engine bay to the rear (which is the luggage area on my wagon)

Couple of reasons for doing this
1. I need to try to fit 2 intercooler pipes plus an air intake pipe through the area where the battery currently resides.
2. Cause my car is a diesel, the battery is huge (about double the size in every dimension to a petrol battery) hence the reason to fit 3 x 2.5" pipe through its space
3. Cause its big, it also heavy (2 carry handles are on it), so the weight advantage of it being in the back are better than for petrol)

Questions:
1. What are the voltage problems that can occur? (Remembering that diesels have a big battery 660CCA to crank the glow plugs before startup + turning a 23:1 comp engine over)
2. What are the legal problems (ie venting, securing)?
3. Are there any other issues?

Thanks

1.get some good welding cable from BOC for $9/m and use that. no voltage problems then.

2. secure as usual. You will need a battery box that is fully sealed with a breather that goes outside the cabin. or if you get a dry cell or sealed battery you don't need a box.

3. not that i am aware of Smile

What size is the welding cable (mm), my car chews a lot of battery power during startup.
Don't want to change batteries (the last one I bought I got family discount from $160 to $95) about a year ago.

as far as the legalities go, here is what an engineer told me when i recently enquired,
-battery must be in a sealed box with a vent to the outside of car.
-battery bracket must be bolted to the car body, (no tek screws!)
-under the battery box a tray must be installed and a drain to the outside (i guess to stop acid spills).
-it doesn't matter if you're battery is a gel cell or whatever, because the rta doesnt care, (i dont have kids but i have to have child restraints).
in short i found it to be a PITA so put a smaller battery back in the factory location, which in you're case wont help much, however if you can get a different shape of battery, or possibly get away with a smaller one, that allowed you IC pipes to fit that would be the easiest route.
matty.

You can do it in NSW.

All the RTA requires is a sealed box vented to atmosphere, you don't need some special tray etc. And if your engineer is cool they will approve it even if the box is not completely sealed as long as it is a gell cell.

Everything is open to interpretation.

how can you get it to vent outside without haking a hole in your boot? od can you get like a tube to go underneath or something?

how much is a gell cell?

You just need to run a tube off the side of the box!

Also it doesnt matter if the battery is a sealed item(Gel cel), It MUST be vented to the outside to meet all regulations!
