is 70 amps enough? Fri, 24 October 2003 13:02 Go to next message
I'm sorta worried my alternator wont keep up with what i need. Its a 70 amp bosch one off a late model falcon. On my analogue celica dash i have for the supra it has a volt gauge, but I stil need to know if it'll safely power:

Thermo fans : a 13 and 14" toyota ones temperature orientated.
A/c fan : 12" davies craig one...again only on when a/c is on.
Stereo : 2 energy efficient amplifiers of decent size.
Dash...changing from electronic to analogue, so a little less power consumed there.
No computer stuff because not fuel injected etc.
couple of litle gauges and pissy little things.

is 70 amps gonna cut it?

yes

i'm running a thermo, high beams, brake lights, and 2 very large amps, and i have no problems keeping the battery charged

i had the alternator rebuilt a few years back, and i am presuming its still at the factory 60Amps

add up your amps usage... and remember that the alt is not putting out 70A at idle...
my 60A XF falcon alt is 24/60, 24A at idle.

each fan ~ 5A = 15A,
elec fuel pump? 5A
headlights? sayy 10A
windscreen wipers? 5A?
(worst current draw is at idle, at night, in the rain)
brake lights? 3-5A
coil? 5A
so about 40-45 so far....

in the rain at idle, you will prolly still be pulling a fw amps from the battery, but at cruising revs, there should be plenty left over....

amp draw of stereo?

oh, can you check the alt to see what the first number is (ie 24/60) curious to see....
