Shaft play forwards and side to side
most 2nd hand turbos will have a tiny bit but if you wriggle it with your finger and can feel it its probably too much
the more shaft play = the more chance the blades will hit the housing = bad
In saying that, 'apparently' ball bearing turbos have a tiny bit of play from factory but i wouldnt go shopping for a turbo based on that..
You want no more than 0.5mm play i guess and thats probably too much

Umm what else... basically the condition of the blades, any chips etc = bad

Hard to check oil seal if the turbos off the car

roughly what sort of turbo are you after? Toyota? Nissan? ball bearing, or bush bearing? ceramic or steel?

Cheers

looking for something to use with 4AGTE conversion. either nissan or toyota, ball bearing would be nice, but not essential.

Yep T28 ball bearing, go and buy one new for around $1400-1500, even good second hand ones can hide problems. I bought a brass bearing T28 that felt perfect, however upon inspection it was found to have been oil starved at one point. A set of oversize bearings and a rebuild later ($920), I had a good turbo (fortunately I paid peanuts for it originally so it didn't worry me)!

As clintgodde said, you cant go wrong with a brand new GT25 (320hp) for around $1500. They are a fantastic match for the 4AG, with excellent response & no loss at the top of the revs.

I dont really trust buying second hand turbos unless I've seen the car running that it came from, unless its cheap enough to not care about the condition and take a chance. Its easy to see problems with the physical condition of wheels, and feel for shaft play, but its just as expensive to change oil seals as it is for a full rebuild, and its hard to tell if it has this problem if the previous owner hits it with some degreaser before you see it Sad

Any later model T25/28 turbos (ball bearing or not) are hard to come by because of their popularity at the moment. Expect to pay around $600 for a bush bearing model, and $800+ for ball bearing, unless you can find a cheap private sale.

My bush bearing S14 200SX T28 may be for sale soon.....

Best value place to buy is www.horsepowerinabox.com

This website is run by RPM Performance centre, a very reputable workshop.

Yes I fabricated my manifold. There's a pic of it here:

but it now has a T25 flange, not the huge cumbersome CT26 one that you see in the pictures.

Any mechanical item that can spin at around 80,000rpm for 100,000km without any servicing should be worth something Smile
