More 4age bigport tvis timing problems Sat, 25 October 2003 05:15 Go to next message
Ok.. im trying to adjust the timing on my 4AGE 16v bigport tvis.
im following this manual:

http://www.toymods.org.au/cgi-bin/photo/index.cgi? album=/TechDocs/4age_book/engine/2_engine_tune_up& amp; amp;mode=viewpicture&picture=tuneup_04.jpg

my mate told me to skip step 2 cause thats not really important.Do i need to do step 2? isnt it just to check the engine is idling normally, hence i can use my incar tacho.

so i continue and do all the rest and adjust it to around 12BTDC @ idle (w/ T and E1 shorted). then i unshort them and rechecked the timing and it was still the same. WTF? in the manual it states the timing should change, rise to 16BTDC or more @idle.

im thinking there is something wrong with the T and E1 terminals or maybe i didnt short it properly? how can i test if it is shorted properly? rev the engine and if the timing doesnt change then it is shorted?

Also i had the adjust it to 12BTDC because that was the closest i could get it. The distributor only slots in a few certain spots, like the cogs and stuff so i couldnt get it right on 10. Any tips on how to get it spot on would be appreciated.

Hmm cogs and stuff? You are turning the actual dizzy aren't you? You should only have to loosen the bolts a little bit and turn the entire dizzy assembly, you shouldnt be lining up the actual cogs at the bottom!

Thats how I read it anyway!

Freak have you had the dizzy out? sounds like you didnt put it in correctly. (like it's one tooth out).
when the engine is at operating temp and all the accessories (fan, heater etc.) are all off. you should notice the rpm drop when you put in the jumper wire as it takes away the ecu's control of the idle.
what is your rpm at when you are trying to set the timing?

have a looksee at this it might help. (i know it is basically the same as the link above).

and are your crank/cams in the correct positions?

Ok, since my car didnt come with the Check connector plug in the engine bay i had to short T and E1 from the ecu

I thought it wasnt shorting out so i checked the 2 wires
ifound that the T wire coming out of the ecu leads no where?

what does this mean and where should it connect to?

Also, another thing to add when i bridged the wires i didnt notice a change in rpm at all. I used the incar tacho to verify if rpm dropped and it didnt move at all.

cheers

I just need to know where your T wire leads, if its meant to lead anywhere?

It might be purely for diagnostic purposes...IE it would lead to the check connector.

thanks

Freak ok according to the 4age wiring diagram on the AW11, the wire T runs from the diagnostics plug to the ECU which should be marked T.
and E1 is in fact just a earth (ground). it will earth from the diagnostics box, and seperately earth at the ECU.

so if you have T at the ECU you can either short it with E1 at the ECU or just put it to ground to be able to check if you have any codes.

Freak all i can suggest then is to see what your timing is at when you dont have T shorted to E1, and then short T to E1 or ground and put the timing light on again and see if there was a change in your timing marks.
if there is a change, eg. the timing is/should be retarded to what it was with-out T on E1.
then you know that you should be right to set base timing at 10 degrees.

Freak on my wiring diagram and ECU pinouts on the 4age in the manual, you should be shorting these ones:
