CT20 to CT26 with GT4 intercooler
|

I am looking at upgrading my turbo on my 3TGTE. Currently it is the standard CT20 turbo, I am looking at putting a CT26 turbo with an adapter plate using existing manifolds and putting a top mount water to air intercooler off a GT4.
Just a few questions about this:
Will the CT26 turbo spool up alot quicker and give alot better power than the CT20?
What sort of boost can these turbos be set at using a GT4 intercooler?
Has anyone done this upgrade before, was it worthwhile?
Is there any other turboes, around the CT26 price range that will do a better job?
Will this intercooler be appropriate and will it do the job?
Any ideas etc about this would be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance.

This topic has been covered several times before, you'll find plenty if you use the search function.
To give you a head start though, which version of the CT26 are you planning to use? Single entry or twin entry, ceramic or steel?

That is probably a question which I should have asked. Which version adapts to the 3TGTE and is most efficient (ie. produces quick spool up and has good power, which is easiest to install, which will give me best overall result)
thanks again

You want a CT26 from a 3S-GTE. The CT26 on a 7M-GTE has a much larger exhaust housing which means lag city for your 3T.

Do you mean a twin entry 3SGTE CT26 Norbie? It will only be beneficial if you construct a manifold with paired runners for the twin entry design, otherwise you will gain nothing.. I've done both & paid the price. However, if its an early single entry 3SGTE turbo, then you'll do fine
With the 7MGTE (single entry) CT26 on my standard 3TGTE manifold, boost response was about 400rpm later than the CT20, but didnt run out of puff at the top of the revs.

Single-entry or no, the MR2 CT26 is still much smaller than the 7M CT26, so it would have to be more responsive. But yeah, the single-entry one is going to be the best option if you're not prepared to build a funky manifold.

1. No, yes.
2. How long is a piece of string? It depends on a lot of factors, but at a guess I'd say it would be good for about 1 bar.
3. Yes.
4. Yes; just about any turbo off a late-model 2 litre engine will work just as well.
5. Yes, although if you're planning to run lots of boost a big FMIC would be a wise investment.

Thanks for your help guys.
bootheman, was your CT26 of a 3SGTE?
If you can, can you post pics of your engine bay, would love to see it, and did you upgrade manifold or just get an adapter plate made up. Where abouts was the work done, by yourself or someone else.
Thanks

i used the orginal manifold and got the bolt wholes die cutted out, only needs to b like 5mm to fit.
single entry from a 7mgte all new
intercooler is a MUST! esspeacily when comen up 2 the weather we are about 2 get. and id say even a cheap stand alone system would b good. and also upgrade your injectors.
and if u have the earlier 3tgte id invest $20 and get yourself a oil cooler aswell, cos these turbos stink up the engine bay like no 2morrow.
they are water cooled and oil so u gota run both and the 7mtgte and the mr2 turbo both need 2 b roated. meaning the oil drain how it is isnt facing downwards, so they roated the outside so it dose cost u about $60.
oil lines are a bitch. oil drain took me 3weeks and alot of trialing but thats cos its about 1mm above the engine mount
im running,
400cc injectors
GTiR intercooler
Haltech f10
2 1/2 exhaust
3" dumpy
mines in my AE86

I have a haltech EMS and also 400cc injectors and upgraded fuel pumps, so looks like all I have to do is get the turbo and intercooler on there.
How does it run with the new turbo, how many RWKW and what 1/4 mile does it run? If you can, can you take engine bay picks, thanks a heap!
