4th Gen Celica (1988 ST162) stereo questions...

I've just bought a neat little 1988 Celica (Don't like the colour, but I'll fix that in time). The first thing I want to do is get a working stereo in it.
It has a dodgy old replacement stereo which doesn't work... The face is too large so it's jutting out, it's sitting in there loose, and whoever put it in just soldered the wires then bound them with electrical tape.
The new stereo I'll get off a mate, he's just replaced his (15 month) old one with a spiffy new model. Dimensions are just right, but I can't rememeber the manufacturer/model offhand.
This will be a first time auto-electrics job for me. I'd like to fix all the wires into a harness to make life easier, then I can just plug in the new unit. But I need to know a few things first, since the simple owners manual is completely lacking in any useful information.
- Does anyone have wiring diagrams for the 4th Gen models? I can only find 5th Gen and later ones.
- Are there any instructions available for removing the stereo 'rack' from the console? I'd like to do a proper job of it and I don't want to take the whole dash apart only to find that I didn't really have to.
(Apparently the 5th Gen Celicas provide access to the mounting screws under the gear stick panel. Is it the same for 4th Gen?)
- I've heard mention of factory amplifiers creating a problem for the power antenna (using the same wire?). I don't know which models that applies to though... If some 4th Gen models had that amp, how can I find out?
- Lastly, I have no clue why the current unit doesn't work (it just completely fails to power-up). It could be the unit itself, hopefully, or it could be another electrical problem. Any tips on tracking it down? Common faults?

ok alot of questions there.
U really don't need the wiring diagram to wire up the stereo, at least i didn't. All u need is power, earth and alt. Then either run the wires to the amp or simply wire the speakers to the head deck.
The stocky deck that i removed did have an amp attached and it ran the speakers off that.
Ne1 else want to take the rest?

Yeah..... here's an idea!!! Get a professional auto elect. to do it for you. It'll save u alot of effort , worry and time doin it urself. Plus u hav someone to blame it it fux up. if u have no clue then u should get someone else to do it, ur up a creek wif no paddle if u screw it up.

Ah, but the whole point of doing it oneself is so that one -learns- how to do these things. That's what makes it fun. Why throw money at an auto electrician when with a little research and preparation it should be possible to do just as professional a job at home.
And yeah, if it's got an amp I want to wire it through that. Where's your amp located Draza? I've read that it's 'hidden' somewhere, which I take to mean that it's not where I'm going to expect it (i.e. under the seats). Is it tucked in behind the dash maybe?
Also, was your new unit one of those types with two 'remote on' connections, if so did you set it up so that the antenna only pops out when the radio is turned on and not whenever the amp is in use?

Lets just say that my amp is currently in the boot . I don't remember if it had 2 'remote on' conections, i don't think it did.
My antenna is currently a manual antenna, it never worked as an auto antenna, i don't think they can out with auto antenna's in the '87(i could be wrong, probally am).

Re: Auto Antenna. I think if you can bolt it in (or already have it) your car has the wiring that will make it work with a custom switch at the front even if the schtereo don't support it.
Re: Wiring. Grab yourself a multimeter and get to work. You will just need to find an always-on source that used to go to the old radio (hopefully), and Accessories line, which should be there as well, an earth and the speaker wires.
A multimeter should sort you out in a jiffy and you can pick them up for very cheap these days. If you wanna learn this kind of stuff you need one anyway.
I know a couple of the guys on this forum have had a nightmare with the schtereo's in their 4th Gens, but mine went pretty smoothly.

I do't plan to touch the speakers yet. To begin with I just want to replace the console unit.
