3s-gte Sprinter... AE-86 of course! Sun, 26 October 2003 20:49 Go to next message
Just a post to maybe collect peoples input on a 3s-gte AE-86 sprinter project... Razz
Could i get some collaboration of ideas of if you were to build it, what are some important touches that you'd throw in?
Purpose will be drift and drag.

So far...

6 spd ex 3s-ge beams Atezza.
Engine is actually an atmo (ex sw20 mr2), being rebuilt with new internals and aftermarket turbo. (make, type and size not yet chosen) We have the better part of the information on converting to rwd with mounts etc, but if anyone has a more detailedset of directions that would be great.
Aftermarket computer (not yet chosen)
Still need plenty of ideas on suspension, differential, body work etc... basically we've only chosen the powertrain, so any little detail you can come up with is appreciated. Smile Smile

Cheers!
Chris.

chris,

i put a 3sge into my ae86. it's not that hard to do.

you will need to update the brakes & diff as well (mine ran a 7.5" diff)

body strength is an issue - especially with a 3sgte!!!

i've got some pics of the engine mount mods too somewhere.
(there is aobut 4 ways you can do this mod) suggest you speak to an engineer before you get too far into this conversion

Hi T,

I would like to know what you did about body strength. Did you stitch weld it and if so at what points?

Thanks

well the car is geting a full cage soon - that will fix it!!

if you jsut wanted to seam weld, the best place to do it is around the tranny tunnel & chassis box members.

A serious diff upgrade will be in order to handle the torque of a turbo 2 litre engine. The 7.5" F series is a good option, but if you're planning to be brutal with it an 8" G series may be a wise investment.

Note that you can't really set up a car for drift and drag; if it's good at one it will be poor at the other!

You can't get a rear suspension to be both grippy and slippery at the same time. If you want to go for both drag and drift, I would suggest looking at an adjustable ladder style rear end. Either that or you will want to be able to adjust the rear end height by a considerable amount every time you change your mind. This will be a compromise for you though and neither height set up will be safe on a road car.

For drifting you will also want to put in a really big rear anti roll bar, maybe even thing about reducing the front one as well.

Toby,

Is this a race only vehicle, or are/have you street registered it?

Hi John,

Toby is referring to a race car, hence the full cage. Not street registered at all.
