On the 5th generation "Japanese Import" Celicas (1990-1993) there is a little red button left of the automatic transmission. It's in the ZR, GT-R and maybe the GT-4 celicas. There is japanese writing next to it, but i don't know what it does. Does anyone know? It isn't the NOS button is it? hehehe!

Nah it aint the overdrive. the overdrive is on the actual automatic gear stick. there are 2 other buttons near the transmission labelled "MAN" and "PWR" no surprises what they do, but im curious as to what the red button does.

I'd be guessing that is the ECT switch to change from econ to power shifting pattern for the auto.

What it could also be since it is an Automatic is that when the car ignition is off, you press the button to move it into gear and it wound't get out of Park... if you pressed the buttona and press the gear lever, you would be able to move the auto leaver into another gear (child lock thing)... but if you turn the ignition on, it will automatically disable the child locking gear lock... if you know what i mean?
Cheers.

Nige... I don't *think* GT4s are fitted with Automatic Transmissions ... If they did, I woundn't mind having one at home.
Cheers

Does anyone know if the 5th gen. celica ZR, GT-R and (japanese imports) share the exact same engine of the australian ST162? If u owned a Japanese import celica with the 3S-GE, could i get parts from an australian ST162?

Its the same engine type yes, but its not identical.
The import motor is more highly tuned with different ECUs and cams etc.
Most parts would swap over thou. Would be much better to find parts from a 2nd Gen 3S-GE at a Jap wrecker however.

Like ZZT231 said, it is probably the shift lever lock out button. Really handy thing to have when playing with consoles/head units, saves you having to start the car to move the bloody gearlever!

Why would i be better to get parts from a 2nd gen. celica? are those celicas grey imports? and are they more common than the 5th gen. celicas?
