Hi guys...
Maybe an odd question to ask in here, but I own an 89 Holden Nova (It's almost a toyota) and I need to replace the engine (They stop working when they blow a gasket and all the oil falls out!). Anybody got any good idea's on a suitable replacement engine from a corolla. I'd like to remove as much of the Holden stench as i can, and I've been thinking about an 86' efi corolla motor. Any thoughts, or advice?

A 4AC, 4AGE, 4AGZE or a 4AGTE, the last 2 options being the best

Would it be difficult to fit any of those in? I could only assume that all mounts etc should be basically the same, and that it should be a "slide in" job. I'm not looking for large amounts of power (yet) , but desperately need to replace a carburetted pig (yes, 1989, and still carburetted!) with something decent.

The 4AGE is a Efi engine, with a decent amount of grunt. As to it just "sliding" in, I'm not too sure, tomorrow when all the rolla boys wake up and are bored at work you'll get some more definate replies. Bear in mind that if you go EFI you'll need a fuel pump and alot of other goodies(ECU, Surge Tank etc..) to go along with it. The 4AC is a carbied engine, not too bad , could be the easiest replacement by the sounds of things.

Why the hell would you replace a 4AF with a 4AC 20 Valve 4AGE - highish compression, quad throttles, EFI, hopefully reasonably priced and not too hard to fit, otherwise the supercharged 4AGZE is the other option. All share the same capacity, mounts, etc. (all 4A) as your original 4AF/6AF, but will add considerably more excitement. You can also steal the bigger brakes, fuel tank/pump etc. from other Toyotas - it's pretty much all just swapping stuff in and has been done by people on here more times than the Australian Prime Minister has made a fool of himself...

Thanks man, that sorts it out a bit for me. I wasn't sure about the mounting etc. Now all i have to do is find someone who is selling some form of 4A on the cheap. Also, does anyone know where i can get all the wiring details and schematics etc for the 4A series of motors? I figure theres gonna have to be a bit of chopping and joining in the looms to make it all work right!

You can get a 100kw 16V 4AGE for about $750. Installation extra. You'll probably get a motor and ecu with this option and you might be able to get a gearbox (at extra cost of course).
You can get a 125kw+ 20V 4AGE or 4AGZE frontcut from between 2 to 4 grand. Again, install extra. This is your big power upgrade. With this option, you can swap anything and everything from the frontcut - eg brakes, aircon, dash, gearbox, diff, clutch.
With both options, you (or the installer) will have to source some other stuff to make it go (like Alchemist said).
Both are EFI. But there's no way around that. Don't bother swapping a carb motor for another carb motor (that might turn out to be just as shagged).
I reckon, if you want to do it yourself, you're safer with a whole frontcut as you have everything in front of you you'll need (except the fuel stuff). But if you just want to take it to a bloke and say gimme a new engine, then the 100kw engine's a easy to come by these days and are worthwhile upgrades (especially from a carby).
Post your location and then people can give you tips on where to go.
And have some pride in the nova!

hehe, some pride in the Nova.. It's funny, when i bought it, it had some kinda weird-ass grill in it, looks like some form of imported corona grill. So no matter what it is, i still refer to it as the corolla. I'm in brisbane, but i very much doubt i'll be taking it to a shop to be fitted. My father is a mechanic, so if i can get all the info, and the parts, it should nt be too hard for us to get it all to work. Mind you, nothing beats having someone on hand who has some experience with this kind of conversion, anyone in brisbane done it? I figure, when the time comes, a couple of slabs of beer will be involved for those who are involved.
Theres no way i want to go to the extent of a 4AGZE at this point, I'd be happy just to get the 4AGE in there. 100kw's is enough to propel that thing along in a much more exciting fashion than it's original motor. Besides, this car will be going to my missus once it is fixed, so that i can get myself a celica or supra to play with.

I dunno about gearboxes, got to twincam.org and ask. There's guys there that can tell you every combination you can fit.
Most of them are in brisbane too.

4AG FWD boxes aren't exactly hard to find, many of us have got 1 or 2 of them lying round, and importing wreckers usually have a bunch of them that come off engines that get turned around RWD.
I'm sure someone up Brissy way would be happy to come over on a Saturday arvo and 'supervise' the project, so long as you fill the esky/shed fridge beforehand!

Also, to make it a legal conversion you need to make sure the engine is from 1989 onwards.. Engine must not be older than recieving vehicle
Youll be fine if you use a 100kw 4AGE because they are from 1989+
