Oil leak from diff Tue, 28 October 2003 05:51 Go to next message
From behind what appears to be the drain plug in the center of the carrier cover i have an oil leak.

Is this a trivial rubber seal that has died, located behind the bolt or something worse?

Ta guys.

I got one too, same place I think.

Can you get a seal kit for a diff? I don't know much about them. Although it might be a good idea to change the fuel filter when the diff is out!

from what i remember its not a rubber seal on the plug its just a steel washer.

I used a brass washer in my ae86 diff and gearbox, i think you'll find because brass is softer you'll get a tighter fit around the hole.

Goop that doesnt dry hard can also be used, just try not to get to much inside the hole.

Hope it helps

I had previously tried to tighten the bolt to this thread.

Any other help or ideas?

Just make sure it's coming from the centre bolt and not the breather at the top! Mine was leaking oil al over the place because the breather at the top was clogged up with grime. Cleaned breatherand problem solved!!!!
