I would've thought either gearbox will hold up to a 20v.
Just dont drive like a total tool all the time and they should hold up fine.

You can break a T50 behind any motor if you are rough enough. That said, I really dont think that a 20V 4AGE has nearly enough torque to bust one of these gearboxes, even if you do drive it fairly hard.
The A series T50 has a larger input shaft bearing, which is a roller not radial type. Other than that, the gearsets are the same. The output shaft is different between the two also, with the A series having 22 splines, and the T series having 20.
cheers

i might be wrong, but i have also heard that the A series T50 has bigger/better bearings all round.....
I have used a T series T50 behind my 4age, with a TE72 tailshaft and diff in my AE71. I haven't tested it yet cos the car isnt going yet - but it went together ok.

Are the bodies of the gearboxes different as well? Or is it just the extension housing on the back? My T-series T50 appears to have split a seal or gasket or something down the bottom seam and is leaking oil everywhere, wondering if it's worth pulling apart and getting some gasket goo or something in there to stop it leaking... or get another 2nd hand box...

Bolting an A series bellhousing to a T series gearbox is not that easy to do properly. There are differences in the mounting faces for the two front bearings, and adapters need to be made to do such a job. Personally, I'd use the Sprinter T50 at any rate - they are the strongest T50 you can get and worth the extra money in initial purchase, as you save on machining costs by not having to make the adapters.
The main cases are the same, and rely on a silicon seal along the case body. Disassemble, clean and reseal it, and while you're doing the job, replace the front bellhousing gasket (@ $10), and the output shaft seal too.

demuire: are you sure it's not the output shart gasket? mine looked like it was leaking from the bottom of the box, but it was just the oil from the output shaft when the gasket split.
just check anyway, don't wanna spend money for nothing, do we?

Umm, well the oil appears to be pooling near the front (near where the bellhousing bolts on), I wiped it clean and it doesn't look like it's coming out from the seam where the bellhousing bolts on, more like about 2 inches behind that. When I tip the gearbox on it's end (output shaft down) it does leak some oil, is this supposed to happen? Or does that mean my output shaft gasket is split too?

When I used a T18 (3T-C engine) T50 with a 4A bellhousing, I needed to change the circlip that holds the lay shaft bearing in place (at the front of the box) as it was too wide in outside diameter, and therefore didn't fit into the machined recess in the 4A bellhousing.
