best way to hook up peripherals? (gauges, lights, etc.) Thu, 30 October 2003 02:38 Go to next message
what is the best place to supply power to after market peripherals like gauges and lights (fog lights), electric fan, etc.?

right now my oil pressure gauge is connected to the radio harness.

my electric fan (from a fiero, not sure if those are found in oz but it's a bad ass fan) is connected to my ignition coil.

anyone have any recommendations? is there a separate fuse box I should buy that i run all my electronics to, or what?

thanks,
chris.

best idea is to run a new power wire from the battery to a new fuse and relay box for the big things like fan and lights. gauges do not use much power so you could hook them up to either ignition power or acc power, or you could use ign or acc power to activate a relay, so you aren't putting extra load on those fuses.

i think it's always better to leave the stock wiring as it is, and any extra bits get put onto their own circuits. that minimises the chance of overloading wires and fuses as your car gets 'feature creep'

Can't help you with the peripheral hook up, but I just thought I'd let you know that I own a Pontiac Fiero down here in Oz, and personally I think they're sweet little mid engine cars!
Cheers,
Tim
