Depends on the features that you want...
And also the sort of removable media that you might already have...
I don't like Sony because they save their vids as Quicktime MOVs and also because Memory Stick isn't an open standard so they cost more.
I have a Canon S40 and I can't complain about it except that vids are only 30secs at most.
Go here and use the comparison thingy... All you do is choose all the features that you need in a camera and it finds them all for you.

i like kodak - hardly leaders in the digital/electronics field (compared to sony etc), yet their picture quality is brilliant, and surpasses the output of more expensive brands. read a proper photographic magazine instead of a digi tech magazine, and see what they have to say

i got a canon ixus 4 with 1/2gig CF card
can take 50+ pics on full quality (2272x1822 or so, about 2meg each) without battery dying
no idea how many i could take on standard quality
4 megpixels
3x optical zoom and 4 digi zoom or so
3 minute movies with suprisingly good mic, panoramic, 50mm close up shots
problem is retail is $900 or so...

I'll let you know about peeping as I only got it today (wife's b/day gift but we know wo'll use it) but it's good as it allows higher definition on enlargements etc. Watch out for waranties from overseas as they aren't always valid here. Also some net retailers are cheaper than retail but have the same problems as they "grey import".
Had a friend just go to japan and it was actually dearer for the cameras (most brands) and memory media than here. If you are in the west, go to castle towers Castle Hill, Fletchers Photgraphic next to the cinemas and ask for Berni, tell her Justin said to give you deal or else! She'll know.
Hope you find what you want

my mate has a 1-2 y.o olympus with a 10x zoom and a 3x optical 3.2 mega and vid
DAMN is all i have to say, when u start to use the digi zoom on any camera it goes to shit, get a decent MP size so u can zoom all the way in with optical then cut it down to a suitbale size with your computer
i just got a canon a60 2.0mp, 3.0x oz and 2.5x dz, not too bad, but it can take some damn good shots
on a 128mb CF card i can take 1200 640x480 shots
and my mates olympus can take nearly 1500 with the same size card, u can also get cards that are 8 times bigger, just think of 10,000 pics with 1 card
or he can take 30 MINS of poxy vid {we know cause he got vid of a strippers act at our mates 21st }
if u got the dosh, opt for the camera that u can attatch additional zoom lenses to,
summary: if u want a point and shoot, get a 2-3mp kodak/sony, if u want really good shots anywhere anytime get a olympus/canon/ixus {p.s. beat to get AA battey compatible ones}
www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au
also shop around onthe net here b4 u go anywhere, mine was $600 retail, hardly normal had it on sale for $500, JB had it for $487, Gamedude had it for $415 and JB beat it for me $5 so i got $190 off retail

look at the pics my $410 camera can take.
also if u wanna spend $550-650 then look at $400 for the camera alone cause u will need a batery charger and bateries {$80 odd} and a card

Different media is more relating to the size (physical) of the card. Compact Flash was about the first, the largest, currently available in the largest sizes (up to 5 gig) used in high end professional SLR digitals due to avalable storage. Has two types 1 and 2, 2 is slightly thicker and larger capacity. Sd is secure digital, about postage stamp size, 3mm thick, not widely used for photo storage. More for mp3's etc. Memory stick, I'm sure you know. Smart media is quite thin but largish, almost a slim compact flash. XD is olympus/fujis card, made specifically for photo storage (how they determine that I don't know) supports very large sizes in a tiny card. Available up to 1gb curretly.
Multimedia SEEMS to be compatable with Sd card slots but may have been a first generation as I could only find listing up to 128 meg.
http://www.dpreview.com/ is a good site for how all dig photo stuff works.
Try to get the largest card you can within reason, unless you go carzy and get something like on x-drive. A 256 meg card on "super high quality" (2288X1712)gives me 98 pics, high quality (2288X1712) is 270, Standard 1 (1280X960) is at least 800, standard 2 (640X480) is 2700. I'm quite happy with that.
I've told her that man with strange hair and supra may be in. She asked "whats a supra?" Please educate her.

MMC is almost the same as SD. Externally, they're the same so they're interchangable. Internally, SDs are faster and can have encryption put on the data.
I've seen 1GB SD cards for sale! How they fit 1GB into something like that I don't know!
Also, compact flash cards, if your camera can take Type II, it means it can take MicroDrives too. A MicroDrive is like a cf-sized hard drive... Very cool, but also drain the battery faster.

Yeah, I have a 4MP camera (Canon S40) and on full quality can fit over 50 photos on a 128MB.
I've taken over 180 photos/videos in one night before the battery needed recharging which was pretty impressive.
Bought my Canon S40 purely for the fact that around that price range ($1300), nothing else gave me the manual override of the exposure settings. I'm an SLR user, and would've missed the full manual option to much.

A guy in QLD. http://yeahdone.com.au/
We've bought from him many times and have never had any trouble.
Although I usually prefer just to go local and find someone who'll match his price. Most people just laugh at me when I show them the prices though...

Think you'll find the genuine Sony Memory sticks arn't being made anymore. They've got some new standard or something, but where I work & at the Sony store near me we are no longer recieving memory sticks in stock anymore.

I just bought a Fuji S5000, and I'm stoked. Best value for what it does. And it is so much better then even the fuji literature make it out to be.
10x optical zoom, 6 million recorded pixels, full manual everything (if necessary), very easy to use.
unreal !
uses XD cards though - $$$$
