My friend told me that with the MR2's that when the timing belts shit itself, the engine turns off unlike other car where the piston's fly and hit the top of the engine???

wouldn't matter if it happened at 5000rpm.
momentum would keep it going long enough to do the damage

you mean that the motor is "non-interference" like the 4AG?

the 3s-fe and 5s-fe are non-interference so i'd be pretty sure the 3s-gte would be the same.

All Toyota production engines with timing belts are non-interference. This means a broken belt won't result in broken valves/pistons.

so they can sell you a whole new motor when it breaks, and then chastise you for not following their maintanence schedule Razz

the reason is that to have to motor non-interference, the fuly open valve musn't come into contact with the piston at TDC (obviously) and this takes a little more creative effort when designing the piston and head.. effort they cbf going to.... the tradeoff for non-interference is chamber/piston shape, and compression ratio. it's easier to have higher CR with interference..

anyhoo,
Cya, Stewart
