AE86 Fuel Tank w/ VL Fuel Pump & No Surge Tank Tue, 23 July 2002 10:30 Go to next message
Has anyone tried running this setup?

I've heard that a 86 Tank w/ VL fuel pump will pump a 4A-GTE no probs.

Or is it really essential to have a Surgy.

Cheers

Why bother with a VL pump when a factory AE82 pump will do the job very well, and if you get the AE82 pump bracket and lengthen it by about 45mm or so it will bolt straight in to the AE86 tank, I ran this setup on my sprinter for 3 years with no problems and Ill be using the same setup in the corolla

EDIT: oops sorry I misread the bit with turbo, but you should be able to use the VL pump in the same bracket...is it an intank pump though??? I would be very carefull if it isnt, last thing you need is a piece of petrol tank rammed in your buttock Smile

I'm talking about the carby fuel tank, and external VL pump.

The other option is to get a JDM AE86 fuel tank and run a ma-71 Supra intank pump.

I originally ran my 20V AE86 with a VL external fuel pump and no surge tank. When the tank got to about 1/4 the engine would starve of fuel when going around corners. I have since installed a low pressure fuel pump (Carter) which feeds the surge tank (around 800ml capacity) - the VL fuel pumps draws directly from this. I now have no problems whatsoever with fuel starvation and the VL fuel pump is now a hell of alot quieter. It's a worry considering the so called mechanic who did the conversion claimed that it didn't need a surge tank Sad

Is your surgy mounted under the car by the fuel tank?

If you could take some pics that would be great.

Yep, it's mounted under the car - just in front of the fuel tank. I made a template out of cardboard first and then got a friend to make "the real" one up. I'll see if I can borrow the digital camera from work and take some pics.
