ATF in W55 WTF? Sun, 02 November 2003 09:29 Go to next message
Took the motor / gearbox out yesterday and the W55 had Auto Trans fluid in it Shocked ATF would be much to light for a manual gearbox wouldn't it Mad I've no idea how long it was in there for, and I only drove the car for a small while, although the box did seem fine...any comments on how much ATF would fuck a W55? wtf was the owner thinking?

Cheers
Wilbo

actually...ATF in a manual gearbox can help with shifting.

a lot of later model cars use a thinner gearoil now, which has no adverse effects, and if it's not available, ATF can be used, without causing any damage.

i see it all the time at work, i did 2 camry's the other day which had ATF in their manual box's... Rolling Eyes

Easier to pour in than manual trans fluid, and if the synchros are sus/on the way out, it can keep them quiet/help the shift to pull off that all important sale.

Interestingly, some manual boxes actually have ATF specified as the lubricant, (EDIT: as has been mentioned).

So its not actually a bad thing? But prbly means the box is a bit shagged....btw pretty sure it wasn't put in for the sale lol (the guys barley touched it and it looked like it had been sitting around for a while...)

Whats the $$ / Time count on new syncros / bearing? Or should I just put it in and wait till it starts getting noisy? (I'm leaning towards being lazy if you cant tell)

Would you be refilling with ATF or 85W/90? Any good gearbox additives that you recommend as well?

Cheers
Wilbo

ATF is specified for many cars, as already mentioned. I've used it on occasion, and it seems to do a good job, my only issue is that I don't believe it would provide quite the same level of protection as top quality gear oil when you subject a box to a great deal more stress than it was designed for Evil or Very Mad As for additives, there was a little bottle of something that I bought from my local parts store that did wonders for my mum's commodore (well, a T5 isn't exactly EVER going to shift nicely!), forgotten what it's called though...

One of the BorgWarner 5 speed boxes used in astron-powered Sigma's used ATF instead of gear oil.

however, if you ran low on fluid, you ended up with syncro soup.

... certainly rates a 2 on the weird-shit-o-meter?

Back in the 60's/70's, most Japanese cars ran a 75-85 gear oil in the boxes, but way back when they were introduced, this stuff wasn't available off the shelf(in Aust), as it is now. When you put the typical 90 grade in a Japanese box, they got awfully tired of trying to shift that thick soup around, and all sorts of problems developed! The Fix, fill the box with ATF, the reasoning being that it had similar wiping properties to 90 grade, but was nowhere as thick!

regards Chuck.

Yup, we used to have a Sigma with the Bogwarmer 5 speed, and yup it was a pig of a box... Thing is, it wasn't happy with any kind of oil you put in there! Evil or Very Mad

So would you be refilling with ATF or 85-90w?
Also how much play in the input shaft is acceptable / expected?

Cheers

id always use manual fluid, as its a lot thicker, and will actually stick to the gears/ components better, rather than acting rather runny when it gets hot.

With my old T50 box, I used regular gear oil. Was a little hard to shift so I topped it up with Dextron III. Its a common fix.

I remember old Honda gearbox's (80's) used engine oil. Which was 10w30 at the time. (In Canada)

I have ATF in my box. As has been said about 50 times, it is a common 'fix' for toyotas, especially boxes like mine which like chewing their syncros. Smile
