icon9.gif  1JZ ECU wiring for all models? Tue, 23 July 2002 20:07 Go to next message
I am new to the forum and looked everywhere, before asking. I am putting a JZA70 1JZ 5-speed into my MA71 1990 Supra (auto). Problem is, that when we hooked up the wiring from the 1jz 5-speed ECU, we ended up burning the ECU up, because of some wiring change that must've taken place for the 90 7MGTE. We swapped the tranny as well, so it will be 5-speed going forward, but the dash-side wiring is still set for the auto. All of the other auto specific "disconnections" have been made.
Basically I am in the process of getting a replacement 1JZ ECU, but the only ones available are from other cars like the JZX90 MarkII (auto), Soarer, etc.
I am hoping to use a replacement from an auto model (figured it might be easier, plug-n-play?). Problem is, I have absolutely no luck finding different ECU diagrams for the different cars that the 1JZ came in. I have 'em for the JZA70, and possibly the Soarer, but would like to find the pin-outs for the MarkII (auto)....JZX90? Sorry the post is so long, just wanted to give as much background as possible. Can anyone help, please?

Haven't got one yet, but do know a couple of people with those ECUs (that can't use them until they get diagrams too). I was hoping that since this forum had people from all around, that someone might even have the Mark II service manual or whatever. Even if it's in Kanji (Japanese), we would still be able to get it translated.
Are you aware of any Mark II/Chaser/JZX81/JZX90 clubs?

I have fitted an auto 1jz to a MA71. there is a fair bit to change but I dont see an reason to fry an ecu. how exactly did it happen?

If you give an ECU basic power and ground connections there isnt a great deal you can do from there to kill it.

We also had an auto 1JZ from a JZX81 running in a VH commodore.

When the auto blew up twice we got a 5 spd for it and it was no trouble running the engine as a manual on the auto computer.

Here's a little more background....
Originally installed the 1JZ-GTE (5-speed) into 1987 Supra (7MGTE/5-speed). Running for several weeks and then bought a 1990 Canadian model Supra (7MGTE/auto).
Removed 1JZ and 5-speed tranny from 1987 Supra and installed into 1990. Removed clutch pedal, master cylinder, etc and installed into the 1990. Making wiring changes in the engine bay, but without making ANY wiring changes at the ECU/dash, tried to start the engine and the ECU started smoking (burned some resisitors/board, etc).
I hadn't connected any type of neutral start switch or whatever to the clutch, did not move any dash-side wires around, even though now using (or attempting to use) the 1JZ-GTE 5-speed ECU in a car that was originally equipped with an automatic. The engine turned over, but would not start (no fuel, no spark?). I was suprised that it even turned over, since I thought we'd have to by-pass the neutral-start switch somehow. That's how it got blown up....
OKAY...so now here's the present situation. I have a replacement ECU, from a JZA70 Supra....automatic! I couldn't find a 5-speed ECU. Originally, I was gonna use a JZX81/90 ECU, since they seem plentiful/cheap, 'cause everyone's used/using JZA70 ECUs for their swaps, but couldn't find any diagrams.
I have not really looked at the wiring diagrams yet, but believe that there's some connection that would've had to move, going from 5-speed to auto, that we overlooked (that caused the short)....which may not even be a factor now, since I'd be using the 1JZ-auto ECU. OR, maybe when pulling the harness back through the firewall, I must stripped/grounded some other wire that caused a short. I will recheck all the wiring, before connecting this ECU, but still need to know if there are any dash-side changes that I need to make, or should it be plug-n-play now??

Sorry for the long story....any constructive input/feedback is sincerely appreciated!!
