Well, I've found a half-cut at least... Tue, 04 November 2003 01:23 Go to next message
A nice big stinking auto 7M-GTE halfcut finally showed up, so I'll probably be going ahead with that one to chuck into the cressy. It's got a few kms on it (about 110,000), and it's missing the intercooler. Aside from that it seems pretty good. Is there anything in particular I should look out for, aside from shaft play in the turbo and a compression test on the cylinders? It can't be started due to the missing intercooler, but I'm thinking of plumbing a piece of pipe across the front to see if I can. The wreckers are usually pretty unhelpful when it comes to this sort of thing though.

I managed to talk them down to $1200. That's a pretty good price right? I hope I'm not being ripped off Neutral

Good price!

the biggest problem with 7M's is the head gasket. From a first glance you can't really tell if its been replaced or torqued down but when you buy the engine make sure you either replace the gasket with a metal one or torque the factory head bolts down to prevent it blowing

Cheers!

Is there anything else I should look out for? Water pump problems? Common oil leak spots? I'm afraid I really don't know all that much about the 7M.

Do a compression test, do a leakdown test if you can, and look for all the common signs of a BHG (oil in water, water in oil, etc). Definitely start the bastard if they'll let you. If they won't let you, proceed with caution!

Check the front pulley - it is a common problem that these will come lose and wear the crank. Any play in it (when the belts are loose) is a bad sign. If there is play when the belts are tight, it's a REALLY bad sign!

Yeah, they're offering a 3 month warrentee. Otherwise I wouldn't touch it! I haven't bought it yet though.
