I've asked this before.... but i never got a definite answer.
If i buy a apanese import 5th genertaion celica.... such as the celica ZR or the GT-R, can i get parts for the engine from a australian ST162?? It is the same engine number, but can i use these parts for a japanese 3S-GE?

st162 uses a gen1 motor, block & head is quite different.
i can get gen3 vrs gasket kits (just become available '94/'99), but if the motor in your car is after '99 it will be different yet again.
every generation of 3sge has a different head. after gen2 the block & crank is basically the same. pistons & rods change too

why is the '90 gt-r a generation 2? cos it looks exactly like a 5th gen SX celica (1990-1993)? so are u saying all the parts for this gt-R (japaenese import) are available here in australia?
what other non-import cars can i get the parts from considering its a 3sge?

Nige,
The previous e-mails have given you the answers you need, but it would be best to talk in model years not "5th gen Celica" versus "2nd gen 3S-GE" as this confuses everyone. The car you are thinking of getting, shares its engine with the MR2 of the same year vintage, meaning they both have a 2nd gen 3S-GE engine.
So, if you are keen to match like with like, only the SW20R MR2 engine is the only other non-import car with the same 3S-GE.
Cheers,
Mitch.

The "ZR" Celica was a 6th Gen. (94-99) wasn't it?
Your defination of "parts" is way too general.
What "parts" are you enquiring about?
Things like alternators and sparkplugs etc, sure. But something like an ECU, cams, and other internal components.. No.
Also be careful with putting older accessories on a newer engine. Pollution controls and emissions may be affected.

'ZR' was used in Australia for the 6th Gen, but in Japan ZR was used for the previous model as well, while Aust only used the 'SX' designation.....this is exactly my point, don't try and talk Celica's in their trim levels, talk years and codes like ST18x and ST205 etc. Makes life easier for people trying to help and answer the questions.....
Cheers,
Mitch.

ok, my bad fellerz. im talking about the 1990 celica Gt-R or 1990 ZR. and yeah Spectral there is an import ZR for the 94-99, but there is also the import ZR for 1990-1993. identical to the st184. thats the one im talking about.
i just want to know if regular parts that need the most changing, are easily available from non-import vehicles in australia using the 3sge.
cos i dun wanna buy a 1990 GT-R import celica and find i have to import most of parts. cos that is time consuming and costly.
i thought all mr2's besides the current ones were all imports.
