Quote, Wheels Mag, "Celicas are hairdresser's cars"

Go to page 32 and Wheels Magazine (Nov 03) have an article on "grave expectations - cars whose potential went six feet under". They claim celicas are 'hairdresser's cars'. And i'm disgusted that they put the picture right next to a Commodore 4 (commonwhore)!

Who actually takes Wheels magazine seriously?? Albeit ANY magazine these days? Wheels just wants to flog you new cars. Motor wants to flog you new cars that pretend to be sports cars. Hot4's wants to flog you subbies and fibreglass. Zoom wants to flog you Nissan stuff. Am i missing something, or is the "technical article" based magazines a thing of the past?

Which model celica was it in the picture that said hairdresser cars? most say that ST184 and St204 (and the new ones) are the hair dressers cars, not the rest, (I guess the St162 is slightly one) but the only reason celicas were branded Hairdressers cars is because they came out with only camry engines later on.
thats my 2cents

Yeah, I read that and I was like.... What the???
I mean they had it in the same list as the Subaru...um...forgotten it's name, that really ugly one, for cars that flopped. Give me a break. It's only one of the highest selling "cheap" sports cars ever.

well with mags like wheels and motor etc.. they test cars that are in standard form and a stock celica is nothing to be happy about... even if they posted a gt4 celica up there they aren't that great in standard form either for a performance machine..
wheels are motor are usually pretty accurate with their results but they are kunts who drive porches and ferarri..

ill defend the st185 Gt4 here - its only got a few misgivings to match it with the top shit out there..
in a nutshell - weigght ( for the st185 )
rear swaybar - too small - bad decision - toyota
Restrictive exhaust ..
Remove them ( or replace ) - and I can swear by my current growing experience that the Gt4 is the real deal and has easily as much potential as a WRX or an EVo given the right treatement in the right areas .. ( why pay 22K for a WRX when you can get a Gt4 for 10 - mod it with 7k's worth of improvements - and still have money for insurance rego , and a tank of premuim or 10 , and have a car thats better performing and cooler looking )
the st205 is still feared as being one of the BEST AWD turbo's ever built .. read the reviews on that one!!
I think the quote in this writeup for the AWD's in particular went something like " and even a few AWD models that took it up with the europenans " thats not bagging them - thats saying they were up there ..
I think this article more refers ( sorry guys who own these BTW ) were the RA 40 - 65 series , not the ta22 or later st162 onwards ..
I also have some out notes from the herald sun re the ta22 - that praises the car Heaps ..
Anyway - piss on wheels , thats what they are there for ( or so my dog thinks )

GO THE CEL'S!!!!!!!!!!
Imma chick so i guess i can't be too shitty, but i guess i can put in my 2 cents anyway...celica's are NOT hairdressers cars, in fact most cels ive ever seen are driven by guys, anyways stock celicas dont really have much to say for themselves, but ANY cel against a commodore SHOULD win. (i hate commodores..fkn queenslanders ) Anyway, any celica that is done up with a decent motor of some sort and any other modifications are dfinatly not hairdressers cars...but let em think what they want whenever a sexy cel pulls up to a traffic light with a crappodore next to it...AND chops it not only in looks but in speed...we can all laugh AND WE WILL!!

have you ever noticed the mentallity of car enthusiests? if whatever being focused on is a front wheel drive or has less displacement than that of their own car it is always labeled a 'hairdressers car'. and if these so called 'hairdresser cars' are modified then it then becomes 'rice'. always in any society there is a subconscious need to catagorise things for the sake of superiority

ahhh beating bogadero's no better feeling went for a run a while ago with a bunch of mates. one chap in particular giving me grief that i should be at the back fo the group. 4cyl fwd no chance i could keep up with their commodores etc. bah he didnt see my tail lights for long. heavy tank cars with rwd had a snowballs chance of keeping up around the tight mountain road eheh i guess he got to enjoy his slice of humble pie
really though the biggest mistake toyota ever did was to put the 5sfe into the st184/st204 they defiantly should ahve stuck with the 3sge. despite the 5sfe beign rock solid its the wrong engine entierly for a sports car. 3sge is a blast of fun to drive

sorry but most aussie celicas are hairdresser cars
they look alright, toyota marketed them as 'sports cars' but come on 18rc 5sfe ????? really , they were called that because they were all show no go. if we had gotten the over seas varients 2tg 18rg 3sge whatever then maybe celicas would of had the sporting title they might have deserved but from what i can tell ..... seems rice predated 90's by a long time...
did i say that outloud??

I wouldn't go as far to call it rice, but it does have its similarities. Looks like toyota australia are doing now what they did back then with the ra60/40, just now they slap sportivo on the side of the car and bump up the price a bit (corrola excepted of course).
Not like we have to worry, thats wot mods are for.
