I let my car idle for a while before I start driving it. Normally about 15 seconds when it's the first thing in the morning.
I don't build any boost until it reaches normal operating temp.
But I'm a bit anal about things like that.
If you haven't been boosting, you can switch your car off straight away.
But generally 3 mins is acceptable, really depends on how hard you've been gunning it. Driving the last few km off boost should be enough to just let it idle 30 seconds or so...

1 minute for cold start - not too harsh for the engine ?! (as long as u stay off boost until its warm .. ok ok)
and if u have been ripping it 3 minutes.. sounds good.. thanks !

In my opinion I don't think it matters if the car has been boosting or not! The idea of a turbo timer is to allow the oil in the turbo to cool. Now because the exhaust gases go through the turbo its going to get extremely hot no matter if it has been boosting or not! When i get the engine fitted to my car I'll be building a "turbo timer" that will shut the engine off when the turbo cools down to a set temperature!
Thats my 10 cents..

The reasoning for that is if the car hasnt been boosting, the oil would not have gotten to that hot a temperature to really bother the turbos... hence need to cool down ...
is that right ?
so are u sure 15 seconds cold start max (and not boost)

Cool1, so you're saying that a turbo spinning at 0rpm would be the same temp as one spinning at 80,000rpm?
Even if you don't do think that it'll be the same temp, when you're on boost, you push a LOT more hot exhaust gas out, thus the turbo(s) will absorb more heat.
Plus they will be compressing more air, the more air you compress, the more heat is created by the friction of the air particles.
Les, if I've been gunning the crap out of my car, and I've been on boost down the street before I turn in, I normally let it idle for 4.5 mins, but I'm kinda anal about that. Also, on a hot day, I'll let it idle for longer.

What about if you just wanna go down to the coles, 2 minutes away... tell us what you would do max... i.e. start up and cool down, to and from the coles.. say u didnt go on boost once...
(BTW do you find that the 1g boosts really early...?? and also, witht he twin turbo, do they go on together or one after another up the rev range ?)

I never said that the turbo spinning at 80000rpm would be the same temp as 0rpm! What i said is the turbo is going to get hot in any state! And by that i mean that it will get hot enough to burn any oil sitting in the turbo and gum it up. I've said it before and i'll say it again, the turbo timer is meant to keep oil flowing through the turbo so that no oil will sit there and burn...

I'm kinda of going to camp in between both of your arguments. I'm of the opinion that if you haven't been boosting your car, you dont need to idle your car as much. Thats fair enough, because you wont be heating the air and the turbo to the same extent.
But, as the exhaust gas is going to be spinning the turbo regardless of whether or not its making any useful boost, its going to get pretty damn hot so a temp device sounds like a good idea.
Thats my 2c anyways.

While not boosting your car will still heat up the oil, it wont do it such extent that should need bother to let it cool down. Basically at you should not run your car in boost until it is at normal operating temerature or close enough. As for cooling down your going to get hundreds of different of answers.
I personally think from anywhere between 1 to 3 minutes but longer is always going to be better. Time is going to depend alot of how you have beening driving your car. Think about your drive a bit and stop phanging your car as much when you are going to come to a stop soon. That way you dont have to wait as long.
